    • In the roughing of marginal portions of a shoe bottom using a rotary radial roughing brush (698) the angle of presentation of the operating surface portion of the brush to the shoe bottom marginal portion is such that a longitudinal centre line of the region of contact subtends an acute angle with the perpendicular to the tangent to the shoe edge for each position of the brush in relation to the shoe bottom marginal portion, the region of contact, moreover, lying at the joint-ward side of the perpendicular. This arrangement is especially useful in the inside waist region, especially at the heelward side of the joint region, but is generally applicable both 'downstream' and 'upstream' of the joint region of the shoe bottom. The acute angle will vary, in particular according to the 'spring' of the shoe bottom (i.e. the pitch of the waist region in relation to the forepart region) and is preferably selected by the operator. Where the method is practised in a machine, the machine preferably has a path-determining mode in which the path of the brush along the shoe bottom can be digitised, along three co-ordinate axes and also the angle of swivel of the brush can be determined, as a digitised value, the various digitised values making up a pattern data file for subsequent recall.

    • A shoe support (1) for supporting a lasted shoe, bottom uppermost, has two spaced apart support members (20,22,44,46;24,26,50,52) for supporting a shoe therebetween. Each support member is mounted for pivotal movement about an associated support shaft (16;18) so as to enable the spacing between shoe-supporting surface portions (46;52) of the members to be varied. Resilient means (56), preferably a tension spring (56), serves to urge the surface portions (46;52) together to a position of minimum distance therebetween. When a lasted shoe is inserted between the surface portions, they thus follow and conform to the outer surface of such shoe. The shoe-supporting surface portions are provided by freely rotatable sleeves (46;52) which serve to overcome any frictional effects which would otherwise act against the insertion of a shoe between the support members or its removal from therebetween.

    • For use e.g. in controlling the supply of liquid (4) to a container (2) forming part of an apparatus for applying a layer of molten hot melt to a shoe upper component to reinforce the component when the layer is consolidated on cooling, a liquid supply control arrangement is provided which has an emitter (10,20) and a receiver (12,22) respectively for projecting a beam of light onto a surface of the liquid in the container and for received reflected light from the surface. The receiver (12,22) generates an output signal having a value according to the intensity of light received thereby, or alternatively, where the light projected is pulsed, according to the time interval required between the emitter (10,20) emitting the pulse and the receiver (12,22) receiving it, and this value is compared with two pre-set values representing respectively a lower predetermined limit (L) and an upper predetermined limit (U) for the level of liquid in the container (2). When the value matches either one of these pre-set values, liquid delivery means (6,8) is operated either to replenish the liquid in the container (2) or to discontinue the supply of liquid to the container appropriately. The upper and lower limits may be adjusted.
