    • A document reading apparatus includes average output value detecting circuits and random value generating adder/subtractor circuits. The average output value detecting circuits detect and hold the average output values of the pixels of the FO, FE, LO, and LE outputs, respectively. The random value generating adder/subtractor circuits each has a function of randomly generating any value between 0 and 1, and performs an arithmetic operation on all the pixels of the LO outputs, using the following equation:Dout = ROUND (Din - 0.5 + RAND + a)    where: ROUND represents a round-off function for rounding off a decimal point or below; RAND represents a random number that is renewed for each pixel; and a represents the difference in average value, which is 1.5 in this case.

    • A method and apparatus of image reading includes a reader, a contact glass, a reference, and a carrier. The reader is immovably mounted and reads one side of an original document being conveyed at a reading position. The contact glass includes a surface contacting the original document. The reference is placed at a side of the contact glass opposite to the surface and movable in an area including the reading position and a standby position. The reference includes a surface facing the reader and having a predetermined color for providing shading data used for a shading correction. The carrier moves the reference to the reading position. The reader obtains the shading data by reading the predetermined color on the surface of the reference at the reading position.
