    • A removal device for removing a hypodermic needle assembly (3) from a syringe (1), wherein the removal device comprises a sleeve (151) provided internally with a series of ribs (153) which engage with a series of ribs (19) on the needle assembly (3), or on an attachment adaptor (6) on the needle assembly (3), when the sleeve (151) is rotated to unscrew the needle assembly (3) from the syringe (2), the sleeve (151) having a clear passage (155) therethrough and having an internal diameter such that the needle assembly (3) and adaptor (6) thereon (if present) can pass freely through it in an axial direction. The sleeve (151) is removably engageable in a hollow shaft (141) through which the needle assembly and adaptor (if present) can drop to a "sharps" container below. The shaft (141) is integrally formed and is power-driven through a gear formation (47) on its external surface.
      A manually-operated device is also described, having a fixed sleeve as described above in which the needle assembly is held while the syringe is unscrewed from it.
      A preferred syringe (1) has an open end through which the cartridge (2) can drop when the needle assembly (3) is unscrewed from the syringe. The needle hub (5) or adaptor (6) has a skirt (18) which is internally screw-threaded to engage the front end of the syringe (1). The front end of the cartridge (2) lies within the skirt (18).
      A removal device for conventional syringes and conventional needle assemblies is also described.

    • A method for creating a sterile connection with a fluid in a container. The container has a sealing member sealing a first end of the container, and a barrier sealing a chamber in fluid communication with the sealing member. The method includes providing a valve sleeve assembly that includes a flexible sleeve having a barrier portion at an end of the flexible sleeve, a hollow first penetrator disposed within the flexible sleeve, and a hollow second penetrator at least partially disposed within the first penetrator. An interior of the flexible sleeve is sterile. The method also includes piercing the barrier portion and the barrier with the first penetrator, and displacing the second penetrator relative to the first penetrator and the sealing member to pierce the sealing member and establish the sterile connection with an interior of the container.
