    • A memory unit comprises a decimation processor operable to receive and convert video data such that said video data can be loaded onto the control circuitry for a spatial light modulator array. At least one input buffer is electrically connected to said decimation processor, wherein said input buffer receives video data from said decimation processor. At least one input shift register is connected to said input buffer via a controlled bus for receiving data from said input buffer when said bus is controlled so as to allow the data to be transferred to said input shift register. To said input shift register at least one array of memory cells is connected to said input shift register for storing data received from said input shift register. An output shift register is electrically connected to said at least one array of memory cells. A controlled bus line electrically connected between an output shift register and the control circuitry for a spatial light modulator is provided such that said data is transferred from said array of memory cells to said output shift register and onto said bus in response to control signals from said controlled bus.

    • An active matrix display device is disclosed which realizes changing over between a wide display and a normal display with a simple construction. The active matrix display device includes picture elements disposed in rows and columns on a horizontally elongated screen. A gate line is connected to each picture element row while a data line is connected to each picture element column. A signal line for supplying a video signal and data lines are connected by way of sampling switches. A horizontal shift register controls sequential opening and closing operations of the sampling switches. The picture element columns of the horizontally elongated screen are divided into a predetermined area allocated to a normal display and a pair of expansion areas included in a wide display. The horizontal shift register is divided into a predetermined stage section corresponding to the predetermined area and expansion stage sections corresponding to the expansion areas. Upon wide display, the predetermined and expansion stage sections of the horizontal shift register are interconnected serially into an integrated condition, but upon normal display, the expansion stage sections are disconnected from the predetermined stage section.

    • This invention relates to gradation display by pulse width control method (PWM method) in each pixel in a capacitive display apparatus such as electroluminescent liquid crystal display apparatus. The driving voltage applied to the data electrodes is caused to vary in a ramp waveform, and the number of gradations of gradation display by the PWM method is increased. Since the capacitive display apparatus is used, the driving pulse is increasingly influenced by capacity as the location of the pixel to be controlled is further away from the drive circuit of the data electrode and in particular its duration becomes extended. As a result, even for identical gradation data, uneven illumination may occur. In this invention, the pulse width applied to the data electrodes is gradually decreased as scanning of the electrodes progresses. Therefore, the brightness of the capacitive display apparatus may be made uniform over the entire screen surface. Also, in the invention an impedance converting means connected in series between a DC power supply and the data electrodes is controlled by a control signal, with a switching means being controlled to effect application of a current to the data electrode for a period according to gradation display data.
