摘要： Embodiments of the present invention relate to an optical repeater and a method for Raman-amplifying a signal light. The optical repeater comprises a rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers (10), with substantially fixed amplifying gain characteristics, having a first amplifying optical fiber including rare-earth doped optical fiber; a Raman amplifier (9), which has a second amplifying optical fiber and pumping units (1) for supplying pumping light having one or more central wavelengths to the second amplifying optical fiber, connected to a front stage of the rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers, the Raman amplifier being configured to have a variable gain profile by controlling intensity of the pumping light outputted from the pumping unit; and a controlling unit (15, 24) for controlling the intensity of the output light which is to be outputted to the rare-earth doped fiber amplifier by compensating for fluctuation of intensity in the input light being inputted to the Raman amplifier by controlling the gain profile of the Raman amplifier.

摘要： A multi-band hybrid amplifier is disclosed for use in optical fiber systems. The amplifier uses Raman laser pumps and semiconductor optical amplifiers in series to produce a relatively level gain across the frequency range of interest. Multiple Raman pumps are multiplexed before coupling into the fiber. The Raman amplified optical signal may be demultiplexed and separately amplified by the SOAs before remultiplexing. Gain profiles of the Raman pumps and the SOAs are selected to compensate for gain tilt and to alleviate the power penalty due to cross-gain modulation in the SOAs. The disclosed hybrid amplifier is especially useful in coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) systems.

摘要： Geometrical design of laser microchips is disclosed that allows variation of the optical path length in the different media by simple displacement of the microchip, the movement having a non-zero projection orthogonal to the pump beam. The concept can be implemented to vary optical loss in the lasing cavity, the absorbed pump power, or the optical length of the cavity. Passively Q-switched microchip laser output performance can thus be controlled by simple transverse displacement of the microchip relative to the pump beam. The above microlaser can be combined with voltage -controlled variable-focus output optics in order to contro 1 the peak power density of the laser pulses.
