    • There is provided means to preserve the multicast address of a frame on a first communications system having a large multicast address space when the frame is forwarded onto a second communications system having a small multicast address space. A connection apparatus is provided for connecting a first communications system with a second communications system. There is a means for receiving at least one first frame from said first communications system, said at least one first frame having a destination address field, said destination address field containing a desired destination address, and there is a means for forwarding said at least one first frame onto said second communications system as a second frame, and for writing a second destination address into a destination address field of said second frame. Also there is a means for writing said desired destination address into a predetermined field of said second frame, and a means for writing an indicator into said second frame, said indicator capable of being interpreted by a receiving station to mean that said desired destination address is written into said predetermined field of said second frame. The frame may be forwarded onto a third communications system supporting the multicast address structure of the first communications system, and the multicast address is recovered from the representation of the multicast address written into the second frame and the multicast address is written into the address field of a third frame transmitted onto the third communications system.

    • A system for use in conjunction with a digital data processing system includes an applications program (11), a user interface (14) and a hierarchy information management system (10). The applications program (11) generates an information hierarchy including a plurality of hierarchy information items organized in a plurality of hierarchy levels. The user interface includes a display (15) for displaying information to a user and an event initiator (16), such as, for example, a keyboard or a mouse for generating event information. The hierarchy information management system (10) receives hierarchy information items at selected hierarchy levels from the applications program (11) and transmits the received hierarchy information items to the display (15) of the user interface (14) for display, and responds to the event information by initiating selected operations in connection with the received hierarchy information.

    • A method and apparatus for generating glyphs for text elements input to a computer having a memory with at least one look-up table storing glyphs corresponding to such text elements. Each text element is made up of at least one code point, and often of several code points. The system searches the table for a glyph representing an input text element, and if it is not found methodically generates subsets of the text element and searches the table for glyphs representing each of the subsets. Default characters are generated for code points not represented in the table. The system uses a classification for each code point, such as the Unicode classifications, and handles unknown code points in a manner dependent upon their classification. Where a text element includes two characters with an intermediate joining character, and the text element as a whole is not represented in the table, the two characters are output for rendering separately. Where a text element includes combining characters and the combined text element as whole is not represented in the table, the system generates the characters separately and then combines them for rendering as a single glyph. Unknown combining characters are replaced by a code point for a blank combining character, for allowing any surrounding combining characters to be rendered in a combined fashion.
