    • A transmitter (12) with an antenna (26) transmits a series of radio frequency (RF) pulses with sequential, incrementally changing carrier frequencies f T . A receiver (14) receives energy from multiple scattering points (S 1 -S M ) of an object (16) reflecting such transmitted RF pulses. The received energy from each one of such scattering points (S 1 -S M ) includes a series of radio frequency (RF) pulses corresponding to the transmitted pulses delayed in time, τ, from the transmitted pulses an amount proportional to the range to such scattering point and shifted in frequency from the carrier frequency an amount proportional to the doppler velocity of such scattering point. The receiver (14) includes a heterodyning section (18), responsive to a range tracking error signal, E R , and a velocity tracking error signal, Δ VEL , for producing at an output (19) a series of pulsed signals for each one of the scattering points. Each one of the pulsed signals for any given scattering point sequentially changes in phase, φ, at a rate, Δφ/ΔT, related to the range to the scattering point producing such one of the pulsed signal series. A processor (24), responsive to each of the series of pulsed signals produced by the heterodyning section (18), unambiguously determines from the frequency spectrum thereof the range tracking error signal, E R , and velocity tracking error signal, Δ VEL , for each of the scattering points as well as the range centroid.

    • The disclosure relates to a radar apparatus of the type which comprises a transmitter which substantially continuously transmits a modulated carrier wave signal, and a receiver for receiving the carrier wave signal (the echo signal) reflected against an object, and in which the carrier wave signal is modulated with an encoding signal in which one bit in the code is of a duration which is several times longer than the period time of the carrier wave signal, and in which the code of several bits forms a block which is characterized by modulation of a carrier wave at constant frequency. Furthermore, the frequency of the carrier wave is changed between the blocks, so that the transmitter transmits one block with a carrier wave frequency which is different from the carrier wave frequency or frequencies which the receiver is set to receive. The apparatus includes means for dividing code blocks of the same frequency into a number of subunits, for example eight in number, in which each subunit is first correlated individually, and thereafter doppler analysis is carried out on the subunits of the block.

    • A distance measuring method and apparatus in which first and second pseudo random signals which are the same in pattern but slightly different in period are generated to obtain a correlation output of the first and second pseudo random signals before transmission thereof as a reference correlation output, and the first pseudo random signal is directly transmitted toward a target or alternatively a carrier wave is modulated by the first pseudo random signal and transmitted toward the target. A correlation output of the signal reflect­ed and received from the target and the second pseudo random signal is detected and the distance to the target is measured from the time interval between the reference correlation output and the received correlation output. Alternatively, the modulated carrier wave reflected and received from the target and the second pseudo random signal are subjected to correlation processing to detect a correlative modulated carrier wave and the correlative modulated carrier wave is subjected to orthogonal detection by a reference carrier wave thereby obtaining a target detection output. Then, the distance to the target is measured from the time interval between the reference correlation output and the target detection output.
