    • A video distribution system especially for an automatic bowling center system, comprises a central control unit; a plurality of video source devices each including means for transmitting a video signal to convey dynamic video information; a plurality of video display terminals remotely located from said central control unit and operable to display dynamic video information responsive to a received video signal; a video communication network coupled to said transmitting means and said display terminals; and switching means operatively associated with said central control unit and coupled in said video communication network for selectively coupling one of said video source device transmitting means to a selected one of said video display terminals to receive the transmitted video signal so that said one video display terminal displays the dynamic video information associated with the received signal. The video signal for transmission may be generated using a memory means storing data representing a plurality of video segments wherein data relating to a selected segment is read out by commandable reading means, converted into a transmittable video signal and coupled to one of the display terminals. When the video display system is provided in a bowling center system including a plurality of bowling lanes, a plurality of scoring systems and a manager's control system, the manager's control system functions as the central control unit. A manager's communication network may link the manager's control system to the commandable reading means. The bowling center system includes a plurality of lanes, arranged in lane pairs, and a plurality of game control units. The scoring systems may be provided per lane, per lane pair or per game control unit. Each game control unit may have a video switch. There may also be a plurality of user input devices, one for each video display terminal, coupled to the manager's control system or a scoring system whereby video signals may be requested.

    • A method of operating a processing system under the control of a multi-tasking time slice operating system to provide continuous processing of multiple tasks using a variable time slice size, the processing system providing for real-time operation of a video display, the display operation defining a video frame refresh time, comprises the steps of: determining a desired system frame operating time dependent upon said video frame refresh time; preselecting an initial time slice time size; operating a system frame by sequentially enabling each of the multiple tasks to perform processing functions during the system frame, the maximum time allotted for each task being defined by the time slice time size; determining the elapsed system frame time; resetting the time slice time size as by increasing the time size if the determined elapsed time is less than the desired system frame time, or by decreasing the time size if the determined elapsed time is greater than the desired system frame time; and continually repeating steps c-e so that the time slice time size is varied as necessary to maintain the actual system frame time close to the desired system frame time. The method may be used to proved real-time operation of video displays used in an automatic bowling center system.

    • This invention relates to an apparatus that enables the TV/video spectator or radio/cassette listener to participate in broadcasted or recorded quiz games at home or in a room outside the studio.
Every player has his own apparatus to give his answer. This individual apparatus calculates the score according to various parameters, which are determined by the studio, but which may be adapted in some realizations according to the player's wish. There may be a number of players in one room all having their own apparatus and competing against the players in the studio and/or in the room.
The question of the quiz master is followed by a signal containing all the information for the apparatus to work (correct answer, maximum reaction time, stake, mode of operation, etc.) The player gives his answer by a keyboard and the points are shown on a display on the apparatus.

    • The invention embraces improvements applicable to the electronic systems for generating graphics and sounds, such as for video game apparatus, of the kind comprising a master microprocessor connected to a data support memory unit and to control means, at least one slave microprocessor managing the video information of image planes, and at least one slave microprocessor handling audio information. In a first aspect of the invention, the video information management is performed by a plurality of microprocessors, everyone of each independently deals with a corresponding image plane, thus speeding up screen display changes. Another feature of the invention contemplates the use of a read and write magnetic memory device for general information, such as a floppy disk unit, combined with read and write solid state memories of the system and control means of the master microprocessor for placing informations of the magnetic memory in the solid state memory to be acceded by the screen and sound managing microprocessors.

    • An on-line wagering system with programmable game entry cards including cards having on-card data storage for value tokens and data uniquely related to the player. The player cards are operable as payment means in which the tokens are spent and as play validation and play entry means in lieu of mark sense slips and printed validation receipts. Demographic player data uniquely related to the owner of the card is stored on the card and possibly in the central wagering system memory. This allows correlation of play entries with player demographics. A plurality of agent terminals in data communication with the central data processor interface between the central processor and the player cards. The agent terminals preferably also accept traditional mark sense entry slips and produce printed verification receipts, upon request.

    • A device for use in assessing the ability of a child to sustain his attention over a period of time, which information can accurately differentiate between hyperactive and nonhyperactive children. In one embodiment, the device (10) sequentially displays (14) a plurality of numbers and the child is instructed to push a button (20) each time the number "9" appears. The device records each correct response (40), each time the child omitted a response (44) and each time the child committed an error (42) by pushing the button (20) at an improper time. In a second embodiment, which is intended for older children, the child is instructed to push the button (20) only if a "1" appears and is then immediately followed by a "9". Again, the number of correct responses are recorded as are the number of errors of omission and commission. In both embodiments, the test is divided into three separate time blocks (18) and the child's responses are recorded separately for each block. The delay time between the display of each of the numbers can be adjusted (16) and different delay times can be preprogrammed for each of the three separate time blocks.
