    • A method includes a first step of introducing an ammonia-containing wastewater to a CO 2 ·H 2 S stripper maintained to have a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure, and discharging CO 2 and H 2 S in a form of gas having a low moisture concentration from a tower top of the CO 2 ·H 2 S stripper while discharging an ammonia-containing solution from a tower bottom of the CO 2 ·H 2 S stripper; a second step of introducing the ammonia-containing solution obtained after the first step into an ammonia stripper which is maintained to have a lower pressure than that of the CO 2 ·H 2 S stripper, and thereby discharging a gas rich in ammonia containing a small amount of H 2 S and CO 2 from a tower top of the ammonia stripper while discharging water usable as industrial water from a tower bottom of the ammonia stripper; and a third step of introducing the ammonia rich gas obtained after the second step into a washing tower which is maintained to have a lower pressure than that of the ammonia stripper, and wherein the third step includes a washing step with a Na-containing base reagent thereby discharging a wastewater containing a Na compound from a tower bottom of the washing tower while discharging a substantially H 2 S-free purified gas rich in ammonia from a tower top of the washing tower.

    • It has been discovered that metals and/or amines can be removed or transferred from a hydrocarbon phase to a water phase in an emulsion breaking process by using a composition that contains water-soluble hydroxyacids. Suitable water-soluble hydroxyacids include, but are not necessarily limited to glycolic acid, gluconic acid, C 2 -C 4 alpha-hydroxy acids, poly-hydroxy carboxylic acids, thioglycolic acid, chloroacetic acid, polymeric forms of the above hydroxyacids, poly-glycolic esters, glycolate ethers, and ammonium salt and alkali metal salts of the hydroxyacids, and mixtures thereof. The composition may also include at least one mineral acid to reduce the pH of the desalter wash water. A solvent may be optionally included in the composition. The invention permits transfer of metals and/or amines into the aqueous phase with little or no hydrocarbon phase undercarry into the aqueous phase. The composition is particularly useful in treating crude oil emulsions, and in removing calcium and other metals therefrom.
