    • A bag opening apparatus is provided by which bags stacked with pins being inserted into pin holes are smoothly opened and delivered one by one from the uppermost one of the bags. The apparatus comprises a center holding member (13) pressing elongations (2) of bags (1) between two pin holes (3) and side holding members (14) pressing the elongations (2) on both outer sides of the pin holes (3). Pressing of the elongations (2) by the holding members (13), (14) is released by rotation of a rotating member (17), (37) around a rotating shaft (18), (38). When the elongations (2) are to be pressed, the rotating member (17), (37) is vertically positioned so that a pushing-up force acting on the elongations (2) is received by the rotating member (17), (37) in a dead point state in the vertical direction. A control device controls such that when the bag 1 is to be opened by being blown with air, the pressing by the side holding members (14) is released and when the bag 1 so opened is to be discharged, the side holding members (14) press the remainder of the stacked bags 1 and the pressing by the center holding member (13) is released.

    • A coil of an interconnected chain of open bags (45) is provided in which the coil has a center opening (92) having a diameter at least as great as the transverse dimension of the bags. A dispenser is provided on which a coil of bags is mounted. An end of the chain is pulled from the center opening and fed around a tapered mandrel (63) and thence over a feed control mandrel (79) oriented in angular relationship with the tapered mandrel. The web is then fed to a bagging machine (50) for dispensing, loading and closing of the bags. The table on which the coil is mounted is rotatable so that the orientation of a span of bags (95) running from the coil to the tapered mandrel remains substantially constant as the web is fed.

    • A tabletop machine for automatically loading and sealing flexible containers such as plastic bags forming part of a chain of bags. The apparatus includes structure for supporting a supply (S) of preformed, interconnected bags which are sequentially fed to a loading station. At the loading station, the bag is inflated by a blower having a shutter controlled outlet so that the flow of inflation air is reduced or terminated during feeding and which provides a blast or surge of air to "pop" the bag open when the bag arrives at a loading station. A residual air stream maintains inflation of the bag. After loading, a clamping mechanism is activated which applies a substantially increasing clamping force as a clamp bar (110) nears a heat sealing unit (114) so that should an obstruction or other obstacle be encountered as the clamping bar moves towards the bag, motion in the clamping bar can be resisted by the obstacle without damage to the obstacle or clamping mechanism. While the bag is clamped to the heat sealing unit, a perforation breaking mechanism (102) comprising a blade-like member (150) driven into the web path intermediate a locked web feed roll (62) and the heat sealing unit causes severance of the loaded bag along a line of weakness formed by perforations. A relatively small, low volume air compressor in combination with a storage tank is used to provide the motive force for fluid pressure operated actuators used to operate the clamping bar and the perforation breaking mechanism so that a single source of electrical power is all that is needed to operate the machine.
