    • A microscope slide stainer, comprising:

      a staining protocol program comprising instructions for applying reagents and heat to a plurality of microscope slides bearing biological tissues;
      a plurality of slide supports, each support being comprised of a heating element and having a surface on which at least one microscope slide rests so as to transfer heat to the at least one microscope slide;
      at least one reagent dispenser that can dispense a liquid reagent onto a microscope slide;
      a movable carriage that causes the reagent dispenser to be aligned over a desired microscope slide, as specified in the staining protocol program, so that reagent dispensed out of the reagent dispenser drops onto an underlying microscope slide; and
      a control system that issues commands to cause relative motion of the reagent dispenser and microscope slide with respect to each other so that the reagent dispenser is aligned over a desired microscope slide, as specified in the staining protocol program, and that issues commands to cause the heating elements to heat at the times specified in the staining protocol program, the control system being capable of heating one heating element to a different temperature than another.

    • An automated slide stainer with slides mounted in a horizontal position on a rotary carousel. Reagents and rinse liquids are automatically dispensed onto tissue sections or cells mounted on slides for the purpose of performing chemical or immunohistochemical stains. The rinse liquids are removed by an aspiration head (31) connected to a source of vacuum. The aspiration head (31) is a hollow chamber (40) with a flattened bottom aspect. Eight holes (41) in the bottom of the aspiration head provide for fluid communication between the exterior and interior of the aspiration head. To aspirate liquid off of a slide, the aspiration head is lowered so that the bottom aspect contacts the liquid. The liquid is sucked into the hollow interior (40) of the aspiration head and collected into a liquid waste collection bottle. Several different liquid waste collection bottles (59) are placed in parallel, between the source of vacuum and the aspiration head. A solenoid valve (80) is positioned in line with each liquid waste collection bottle. Depending upon which solenoid valve is opened, the operator can direct the liquid waste to be collected into a specified liquid waste collection bottle.

    • A method and apparatus for an automated biological reaction system is provided. In the processing of a biological reaction system, there is a need for consistently placing an amount of fluid on a slide. In order to accomplish this, several methods are used including a consistency pulse and a volume adjust means. Moreover, in order to reliably operate an automated biological reaction system, the dispenser must be reliable, easy to assemble and accurate. Among other things, in order to accomplish this, the dispense chamber (412) is substantially in line with the reservoir chamber (410), the reservoir chamber piston is removed, and the flow of fluid through the dispenser is simplified. Further, in order to operate the automated biological reaction system more reliably, the system is designed in modular pieces with higher functions performed by a host device and the execution of the staining operations performed by remote devices. Also, to reliably catalog data which is used by the automated biological reaction system, data is loaded to a memory device, which in turn is used by the operator to update the operator's databases. The generation of the sequence of steps for the automated biological reaction device based on data loaded by the operator, including checks to determine the ability to complete the run, is provided.
