For the down-shifting direction, at least the rear derailleur cam is configured so as to substantially compensate for increasing force of the derailleur return spring (208) so as to substantially compensate for numerous cumulative lost motions in the derailleur shifting mechanism (54) and cable system (60, 64), and for chain gap variations; and so as to overshift the chain a sufficient amount beyond the destination freewheel sprocket (54a) so that the chain will approach the destination sprocket (#5) in the same direction as it would in the up-shift direction, but not sufficient to cause a double shift, or derailling from the #1 sprocket. A front derailleur cam is configured to provide fine-tuning for ''cross-over'' riding.

The bicycle transmission generally includes an input crank assembly (18), an output chainring (20), a planetary gear mechanism (22), a control system (24) and a mounting system (26). The output chainring (20) engages a bicycle drive chain (59) that includes a plurality of chain links (106). The planetary gear mechanism (22) includes a ring gear (42) and provides a plurality of transmission paths. The planetary gear mechanism (22) is mounted coaxially about the shell axis (16). The control system (24) is operatively connected to the planetary gear mechanism (22) for selecting one of the plurality of transmission paths. The mounting system (26) mounts the planetary gear mechanism (22) and the control system (24) to the bottom bracket shell (12). At least one chain link (106) overlaps the ring gear (42) as viewed along the shell axis (16). The at least one chain link (106) engages the output chainring (20).
