    • In a thermal transfer type color printer, an ink film (6) on which plural color inks are sequentially painted in its longitudinal direction is sequentially transported forward between an ink film supply roll (7) and winding roll (9a), while a printing paper (2) is repeatedly transported forward and backward in order to print out a color image by overlapping plural color inks. In color printing, the printing paper and ink film are partially overlapped and wound around a platen roller (5), and a thermal head (10) is pressed against the platen roller by sandwiching the ink film and printing paper therebetween so that the thermal head transfers the color inks on the printing paper. In order to prevent wrinkles from being formed on the ink film, tension applying means (16, 25 to 31, 101) applies tension force to the ink film by temporarily controlling or stopping revolution of the ink film supply roll. In addition, such tension force is also applied while the printing paper is transported backward, so that printing start position of each color ink is accurately coincided with printing position of the thermal head. Thus, a desirable color image can be printed out without color dislocation and without forming un-transferred portions thereof.

    • A thermal transfer type printer prints a desirable dot pattern on a printing paper (5) by heating heating cells (TH₁ to TH n ) within a thermal head (6) which is pressed against the printing paper via a transfer ribbon (1), the surface of which is painted by thermal melting ink. A memory (15, 16) stores two kinds of current-on time data, each of which represent specific current-on time characteristics designating a relation between the current-on time and a surrounding temperature of the thermal head. This surrounding temperature is detected by a thermistor (8) mounted on the thermal head. One of two current-on time characteristics can be arbitrarily selected, and desirable current-on time is read from the selected current-on time characteristics based on the detected surrounding temperature. Some heating cells are selected in accordance with the desirable dot pattern and the selected heating cells are heated for the desirable current-on time. In addition, the current-on time can be arbitrarily set longer or shorter by increasing or decreasing the value of the current-on time data, whereby the printing density can be arbitrarily varied.

    • An apparatus for stopping a carriage, movable along a track on a floor, at a preselected position includes at least two magnets mounted on one of the carriage and the floor and spaced from each other along the track, the two magnets generating respective magnetic forces of predetermined magnitudes. At least two secondary iron cores are mounted on the other of the carriage and the floor and spaced from each other along the track. The two iron cores and the two magnets are held in spaced relation to each other during the movement of the carriage along the track, a spacing between the two magnets being different from a spacing between the two secondary iron cores. The two magnets exert attractive forces on the two secondary cores, respectively, when the carriage is close to the preselected position, so as to stop the carriage. A detection device detects a displacement of the carriage from the preselected position to produce a detecting signal representative of the displacement. A magnetic force-adding device is responsive to the detecting signal for adding a magnetic force, corresponding to the displacement, to at least one of the two magnets.
