    • A system for identifying workpieces by scanning them and "reading" details of their configuration is adapted for applying a desired pattern of material in powder form (e.g. toner material or a hot melt adhesive) to the workpieces regardless of their location and orientation on a workpiece support (18), using an electrostatic printer (36) e.g. an ionographic printer. This is achieved by pattern data (relating to the desired pattern) selected from a store being modified in accordance with positional data (relating to the location and orientation of the workpiece) obtained during scanning (Figure 2), such modified pattern data being utilised to apply the desired pattern of powder to the surface of the printing member (roller 38) of the printer such that, when the roller and workpiece are brought together the powder is applied in its pattern to the desired locality of the workpiece.

    • A heel seat lasting machine has a shoe support (110) swingable between a loading position and a lasting position. In the loading position a holddown (5) provides a three-point (8, 9, 10) contact with the heel seat of the shoe and sets a height datum against which the shoe support (110) jacks the shoe. The toe support (14) is then positioned by moving a toe-engaging element (15) into engagement with the shoe toe and, following such engagement, raising the toe support (14) against the shoe. The shoe width in the heel breast region is measured by shoe-engaging members (29, 30) mounted on the holddown support. The members (29, 30) also serve to orient the centre line of the heel seat on the centre line of the wipers (46). The width measuring function of the members (in this case mechanically by Bowden cable (42)) serves to position the heel band (45) lengthwise of the shoe, set up an intermediate position of the wipers (46) (in which they act as a holddown at the lasting position) and determine the "end of inwipe" position of the wiper plates (46).

    • A heel nailing machine has a plurality of feed tubes (14 to 24) through which nails can be fed one by one from a nail separating station (12) to a receiving block (26) for transfer by a so-called nail loader (40) to a nailing station (36). Each tube has a nail sensor (46) for optically sensing the passage of nails therealong.     • A method of treating shoe parts having a coating of a moisture-curable composition utilises an apparatus in which a support (16) for an article, e.g. a lasted shoe S, can be supported within a chamber (30) in which the support can be enclosed. The chamber (30) is supplied with heat and moisture. More especially, the article is subjected to infra-red radiation from a heater (44) and steam is supplied to the chamber (30) such that the humidity of the atmosphere within the chamber (30) is maintained during the operating cycle at a dew point of between 50 and 60°C. The surface temperature of the heater (44) is between 250 and 420°C, preferably between 300 and 380°C, and the article is subjected to infra-red radiation for a period of between 5 and 25 seconds, preferably 10 seconds. Because the chamber (30) is enclosed, steam is supplied for only the first 5 seconds of the heating period.
      To facilitate work handling, the support (16) is movable between a loading/unloading position and an operative position within the chamber (30), and an arrangement of screens (52,54) is provided for closing the chamber respectively in the loading/unloading position and the operative position. The screens also serve to cause the steam created during a cycle of operation to be evacuated into ambient atmosphere at the end of each operating cycle.
