摘要： An oscillator is formed by a resonator (RES) coupled to an amplifier (AMP) via a coupling path (COP). In order to counter unwanted oscillations due to parasitic resonances in the coupling path (COP), the coupling path (COP) includes a series resistance (RS). To improve the noise-performance even more a series capacitance can be included in the coupling path (COP). Such a series capacitance will also effectively widen a frequency range over which the oscillator can be tuned.

By introducing a filter-order enhancing feedback loop (124) in association with a phase shift filter (122) in the oscillator, higher-order phase shift filtering can be achieved without using inductive elements as in conventional higher-order LC phase shift filters. This is a great advantage, since a high Q-value can be obtained without limited by the relatively high internal losses of inductive elements (L).

The control signal is obtained from a frequency control circuit that compares the phases of the oscillating output signal and a reference signal. The control signal controls the transconductance of a transconductance element in the oscillator, thereby controlling the oscillator output frequency. The oscillating input signal is obtained from an amplitude control circuit that detects an amplitude limit of the oscillator output. The oscillator output amplitude is responsive to the oscillating input signal. Frequency control and amplitude control in this tuning circuit are mutually independent, so their respective control loops remain stable under all frequency and amplitude combinations.

摘要： An LC-VCO includes a multivibrator which outputs a frequency signal, a fine tuning circuit which tunes the frequency signal by a first amount, a coarse tuning circuit which tunes the frequency signal by a second amount, and a control circuit which controls the fine and coarse tuning circuits. The coarse tuning circuit is formed from one or more capacitive arrays and the fine tuning circuit is formed from one or more varactors. The capacitive arrays are preferably controlled by a digital signal, where each bit selectively couples a respective capacitor to the multivibrator. An analog signal controls the value of the varactors. The capacitive arrays and varactors charge and discharge an inducator in the multivibrator to tune the frequency signal. The VCO may be incorporated within a phase-locked loop, where the capacitors may be assigned different weight and/or redundancy values to tune an output frequency signal. In one embodiment, coarse tuning and lead-lag detection is performed more accurately to allow the size of the varactors to become significantly reduced compared with other circuits which have been proposed.
