    • Defective pixels in a CMOS array give rise to spot noise that diminishes the integrity of the resulting image. Because CMOS arrays and digital logic can be fabricated on the same integrated circuit using the same processing technology and relatively inexpensive and fast circuit can be employed to digitally filter the pixel data stream and to identify pixels having values that do not fall in the range defined by the immediately neighboring pixels and the deviate from the neighboring pixels by more than a threshold amount. Such conditions would indicate that the deviation is caused by a defective pixel rather than by desired image data. The threshold amount can be preprogrammed or can be provided by a user or can be dynamically set using feedback indicating image quality. The filter would also provide a solution for other sensors such as CCD.

    • A black level detecting circuit compares an input video signal with a current minimum value of input video signals, then detects a difference between the input signal and the current minimum value when the input value is smaller than the current minimum value, and then outputs the detected difference only during a detecting period of the black level, then corrects the minimum value by using this output for renewing the current minimum value, and finally outputs this renewed minimum value as a new minimum value of the input video signal. The black level detecting circuit also latches the minimum value during the vertical blanking pulse and initializes the minimum value during a vertical blanking period so as to detect a black level of the input signal. As such, the black level detecting circuit measures the black level only during a video period, thereby reducing detection errors due to noises, and also an automatic initialization of the minimum value during a blanking period can contribute to a more stable detection of the black level. The black level detected can be used effectively as a control signal over picture quality for each field or each frame.

    • An image correcting apparatus calculates, when an accepted processing target image is determined to be a dark image because an average brightness of an entirety of the processing target image is lower than a predetermined value, a distribution balance of a frequency of appearance of pixels by dividing a dark area indicating an area lower than the average brightness into a very dark area and a slightly dark area; determines if there is a possibility of causing a black floating phenomenon or a black defacement phenomenon based on the calculated distribution balance; determines a correction amount corresponding to the black floating phenomenon or the black defacement phenomenon when there is a possibility of causing the black floating phenomenon or the black defacement phenomenon; and corrects the processing target image by using the determined correction amount.
