摘要： A clad optical fiber having a non-circular section is provided by apparatus which continuously extrudes a flowable jacketing material around a circular fiber preform and then draws the jacketed fiber through a circular sizing die to provide the desired cross-sectional shape. A minicomputer with inputs from a winding bobbin position sensor and pressure transducer not only controls feeding of the circular fiber preform and the flow of jacketing material to the extruder, but also the supply of inert gas to the apparatus. A particularly favorable clad fiber cross-sectional shape includes tangentially alternating circular segments and radially extending "flaps" positioned to fall in the interstices formed when the fiber is wound on a bobbin with abutting and overlapping turns.

摘要： A coated optical fiber comprising an optical fiber (1); a first layer (18) of a thermoplastic rubber composition (15) which is disposed around the circumference of the optical fiber, has a Young's modulus of 0.1 GPa or less, and is capable of extrusion coating; and a second layer (19) of a thermoplastic resin composition (16) which is disposed around the circumference of the first layer, has a linear expansion coefficient of 1 x 10 -5°C-1 or less and a Young's modulus of 5 GPa or more, and is capable of extrusion coating. The optical fiber is coated simultaneously with the first and second layers immediately after the spinning of the optical fiber. An apparatus for fabricating the coated optical fiber has an extruding machine for extruding the thermoplastic rubber composition and the molecular-orientated thermoplastic resin composition; and a crosshead for simultaneously coating the optical fiber with the extruded thermoplastic rubber composition and molecular--orientated thermoplastic resin composition to form the first and second layer around the optical fiber. The coated optical fiber has excellent transmission characteristics at low and high temperatures and is inexpensive.

摘要： This invention relates to an improved method for forming two or more coating layers on a fiber. A first coating liquid is applied by an applicator having a die (e.g. 101) that provides for the formation of a gap (e.g. 103) between the die and the first coated layer. A second die (e.g. 104) is located at the exit of the first die, with the second coating liquid flowing onto the fiber through a relatively narrow clearance (e.g. 106) between the first and second dies. The clearance is formed by die surfaces perpendicular to the fiber axis. This second die also provides for a gap, (e.g. 110) so that the second layer is applied at a "free surface" at the point of contact with the first coated layer. This approach eliminates turbulence and coating nonuniformities associated with prior art multiple coating techniques.
