    • The machine comprises workpiece feeding means in the form of a conventional hammer-and-anvil arrangement, the distance through which a workpiece is fed past the operating instrumentalities in a single feed step of said arrangement (the "feed length") and the speed between successive feed steps (the "feed speed") being controlled according to the curvature of a workpiece edge portion approaching the operating instrumentalities. To achieve this control an array of emitters (E1-E12), made up of two separate sets (E3 to E8 and E9 to E12) arranged one at each side of a line passing through the operating locality and parallel with the direction of work feed, is provided, and according to the degree to which one or other of said sets is covered or uncovered, as the case may be, the feed length and feed speed are varied in order to achieve the desired feed rate of the workpiece through the operating locality according to its edge curvature.

    • A device applying a two-component composition to a workpiece surface comprises an applicator head (384) to which the two components are supplied separately via tubes (726, 382) arranged one inside the other. The applicator head includes a ball member (392) over the surface of which the components supplied via the tubes can flow and be applied to the workpiece surface, substantially unmixed at the point of application. The applicator head (384) supports a rotary brush assembly (398) which, when its annular operating surface portion is pressed against the workpiece surface, serves both to mix the substantially still separate components on the workpiece surface and to spread the thus formed adhesive composition over the workpiece surface. A gravity-fed system (T, RV1, RV2) is provided for supplying a first component and a pressurised feed system (P, R, RV3, RV4) for supplying a second component respectively to first and second bellows units (756, 744) from which said quantities are then fed separately at a controlled rate to the point of application (380). For metering the two components the bellows units are caused to increase or decrease in volume at a controlled rate, such that the component flow rate therefrom is constant throughout their operation. A control device for controlling the bellows units includes a pivotal lever (762) to which each unit is connected by an articulated linkage (760, 778).

    • For digitising a last or other irregularly shaped article, an optical system is used comprising a laser device (14) fixed on a machine base (10) and directing a light beam at a last supported for rotation about an axis, perpendicular to which the light beam is directed. Two cameras (16) are also fixed to the base, one at each side of the laser device, and each comprising an array of cells for detecting the point of incidence of the light beam on the last surface. As the last is rotated, the point of incidence will vary in relation to a datum, e.g. the axis of rotation, and the point of maximum intensity of illumination on the array of cells will vary across the array accordingly. By a correlating technique, the distance of the point of incidence from the datum can be determined according to the point of maximum intensity on the array. Thus, for digitising the last, it is necessary merely to rotate it and also move it in a direction along its length for a large number of point positions to be detected, these being then stored as digitised coordinate axis values (R-theta-Z). Because the last is an irregularly shaped object, in certain circumstances it is necessary to provide more digitised point positions than in other areas. Such area requiring greater definition are boundary points of the last bottom, regions of high curvature and also "long arc" regions (i.e. regions where, because of the angle of the light beam to the last surface, the distance between consecutive points of incidence is large). These are all catered for either by flagging for a subsequent in-fill operation or by back- stepping over reduced angles of rotation of the last.

    • The workpiece feeding means comprises a conventional hammer-and-anvil arrangement driven at a speed under operator control (T) and with variable feed length for "normal", "snipping" and "pleating" operations. For each workpiece shape a set of settings of these three feed lengths (SS1, SS2 and SS3) is stored in computer memory under an identification (SS4) by which such set can subsequently be accessed. The set may also include other style-sensitive settings, e.g. rate of adhesive flow (SS9), delay in supplying adhesive (SS5), "density" of snipping (SS6), for subsequent recall with the feed length settings. Provision is also made for certain operator-sensitive settings, e.g. maximum feed speed for the particular operator (SS7) as a proportion of the overall maximum for the machine; this enables the operator control (T) to be fully used over its whole range and thus to maintain the sensitivity of control it provides regardless of the maximum speed set. Provision is also made for certain adhesive-sensitive settings, e.g. creaser foot temperature (SS8). The operator- and adhesive-sensitive settings do not form part of the set of settings for a particular workpiece.
