    • A device applying a two-component composition to a workpiece surface comprises an applicator head (384) to which the two components are supplied separately via tubes (726, 382) arranged one inside the other. The applicator head includes a ball member (392) over the surface of which the components supplied via the tubes can flow and be applied to the workpiece surface, substantially unmixed at the point of application. The applicator head (384) supports a rotary brush assembly (398) which, when its annular operating surface portion is pressed against the workpiece surface, serves both to mix the substantially still separate components on the workpiece surface and to spread the thus formed adhesive composition over the workpiece surface. A gravity-fed system (T, RV1, RV2) is provided for supplying a first component and a pressurised feed system (P, R, RV3, RV4) for supplying a second component respectively to first and second bellows units (756, 744) from which said quantities are then fed separately at a controlled rate to the point of application (380). For metering the two components the bellows units are caused to increase or decrease in volume at a controlled rate, such that the component flow rate therefrom is constant throughout their operation. A control device for controlling the bellows units includes a pivotal lever (762) to which each unit is connected by an articulated linkage (760, 778).

    • A shoe support (18) for use in a machine for operating progressively onside wall portions of a lasted shoe upper comprises a last pin (722′) and a toe support (792) both of which are movable heightwise to bring a shoe supported thereby to a heel seat height datum and toe end height datum as determined respectively by a holddown (450) and toe abutment (806). Heel end centralising means (390) and toe end centralising means (822) are also provided. When the shoe has been properly located the last pin is urged to pivot toewardly thus to cause the last pin to "bind" on the last pin hole formed in the last and, by the counter-force supplied by the toe support (792) the shoe is thus securely clamped on the last pin and toe support, such that as the side wall roughing tool (250) is caused to progress around the side wall portions of the shoe, the toe abutment 806 can be moved to an out-of-the-way position, as the tool approaches the toe end of the shoe, and similarly the holddown and heel end centralising assembly (780) can be bodily retracted to an out-of-the-way position as the tool approaches the heel end of the shoe. Preferably before the retraction of said assembly (780) the toe abutment (806) is restored to its operative position.

    • For operating on shoes marginal portions of which have broken seams, resulting in the possibility of the top portion of such seam being loose, a facility is provided for moving the tool (250) out of operative contact with such marginal portion while travelling in a first direction, in which the seam would be engaged with the top portion thereof "downstream" of the seam (thus giving rise to the possibility of the top portion being lifted by the tool), whereafter the tool and shoe are returned into operative contact and the direction of movement of the tool relative to the marginal portion is reversed so that the tool is caused to operate in the reverse direction progressively along the particular marginal portion, and then the tool is once more moved out of engagement with the shoe and moved in the first direction above the marginal portion which has been treated as aforesaid in the reverse direction, the tool and shoe once more then being returned into operative contact and the treatment of the marginal portions of the shoe with the tool moving in said first direction then being continued.

    • Two embodiments of the invention are described, namely a machine for performing an adhesive-applying operation progressively along marginal portions of the bottoms of lasted shoes and a machine for performing a roughing operation progressively along side wall portions of lasted shoes, each machine comprising a tool holder (670) for supporting a tool (20) for operating along three axes (X-, Y- and Z-axes) upon a workpiece surface, e.g. marginal portions of a shoe bottom. In addition the tool holder (670) is capable of pivoting in two directions, widthwise and lengthwise of the shoe bottom, about a point (P), but without displacement of said point in relation to the shoe support by reason of such pivotal movement. The movement along the various axes and the pivotal movement are all controlled by n.c. motors, e.g. stepping motors ((84), (144), (122), 698, 700), and operator-actuatable means is provided for enabling the path of such tool, including such pivotal movement, to be digitised under operator control.
