    • The invention relates to a disposable transportable reaction crucible for a metallothermic, especially aluminothermic, welding portion, comprising a crucible cover (2) with a cylindrical casing (3) and a flat floor (4); a lid (11) and a refractory lining (7; 6, 9) in the cover, said lining accommodating the welding portion and having a opening in its base which melts open. The aim of the invention is to provide a means of using inexpensive materials for the crucible cover and holding the reaction crucible securely in said cover with an inclined floor. To this end, a support ring consisting of a refractory material is placed on the flat floor (4) of the crucible cover (2), which consists of a non-metallic material, with its flat underside (5a). Said support ring (5) is adapted to the inner diameter of the casing and its top surface (5b) forms a cone in the direction of a central opening (5c). The refractory lining is a specially made cylindrical reaction vessel (7) which is inserted into the casing (3). Its floor (6; 6a, 6c) is configured in the shape of a cone corresponding to the top surface (5b) of the support ring and lies on said ring, engaging in the central opening (5c) of the same with a hollow oval half dog (6d).

    • A device for aluminothermic welding of two ends of a rail, i.e. a casting mould (4) which is open on the upper side thereof, provided with a central casting area which is defined by the ends of the rails which are distanced from each other by a welding groove (3) and defined by the walls of said casting mould (4), in addition to comprising at least one riser to the side of the casting area, said riser being permeably connected to the casting chamber exclusively in the region of the foot (11) of the rail, wherein a reaction pot (1) is provided on the bottom thereof with an outflow device causing the steel melt to flow out of the reaction pot (1) into the casting mould (4). In order to avoid turbulent flow conditions inside the casting mould and to homogenize the solidification of an intermediate cast structure between the ends of the rails, the device is embodied in such a way that the steel flowing out of the reaction pot (1), upon termination of an aluminothermic reaction and after separation of the steel and slag, enters the casting chamber directly in the form of a falling stream and enters the at least one riser (13) in the form of a rising stream. The above-mentioned measures result in a better welded product in terms of quality in comparison with prior art, said product being devoid of welding errors and structural errors.

    • An exothermic welding system uses compressible layers of disposable refractory batting (86,87,88) or gaskets to form a weld chamber for parts (84,85) to be welded. The parts (84,85) to be welded are layered with the batting (86,87,88) between a base (49) and a crucible platen (66) supported by a clamping fixture (30). The layered batting (86,87,88) is provided with the holes (89) intersecting the parts (84,85) to be welded. The holes (89) form the weld chamber. The crucible platen (66) is provided with a chamber (91) for the exothermic material which when ignited forms molten metal which flows through a tap hole into the weld chamber. When the weld is made, the fixture is opened (30) and the batting (86,87,88) is discarded. The invention concerns also a method of forming the welded connection by compressing the layered batting (86,87,88) and the parts (84,85) to be welded to form the disposable weld chamber enabling a wide variety of connections not requiring a large inventory of special refractory mold parts.

Die Kopfseitensteiger (25) sind derart angeordnet, daß ihre Querschnittsfläche unterseitig an die untere Kante der Kopfflanken (14) des Schienenkopfes (8) angrenzt und sich ausgehend von dieser Kante aufwärts erstreckt. Indem der Einmündungsquerschnitt der Kopfseitensteiger (25) in den Gießraum nach Maßgabe der Dicke des Schienensteges (7) gemäß 0,6 hL ≤ A ≤ 3,75 hL bemessen ist, wobei h die Höhe des Schienenkopfes, wobei L die Breite der Schweißfuge und wobei A die Fläche des Einmündungsquerschnitts bezeichnet, kann eine Lunkerbildung insbesondere in dem kritischen Übergangsbereich zwischen Schienensteg (7) und Schienenkopf (8) wirksam unterdrückt werden.

    • A strip welder utilizes relatively few mold parts, each having a clamping face to weld flat conductors such as conductive strip, bar, braids or even tape. One mold part includes a tap hole leading to a weld chamber and some such tap hole molds may include shallow strip receiving channels in the clamping face. A counter-mold part includes a chamber in the parting face and strip channels which accommodate the strip to be welded when the mold parts are clamped together. The counter-mold part has a generally square face and is supported in a fixture so that it can be turned 90° to form different types of connections. The counter mold may have an opposite face to make yet further types of connections. The molds are supported in a fixture which releasably secures the molds for quick interchangability. By changing the one mold part which includes the tap hole, the molds may be oriented easily for making horizontal or vertical connections. The fixture includes a slightly angled crucible support for a vertical orientation weld. With the strip welder and method, a wide variety of electrical connections can be made with relatively fewer simple refractory mold parts.
