    • An apparatus is described for mixing and separating magnetic particles comprising:

      at least one linear array of containers (135; 145; 154A);
      each container (135; 145; 154A) having a liquid and said particles therein;
      at least two linear arrays (-; 146A, 146B; 151, 152) of magnetic sources (134; 147; 155) arranged in a linear pattern near said array of containers (135; 145; 154A);
      means providing linear movement between said one array of containers (135; 145; 154A) and said two arrays (-; 146A, 146B; 151, 152) of magnetic sources (134; 147; 155); and
      means for stopping said linear movement whereby said particles become immobilized as a relatively compact mass aggregate on the inside walls of said containers (135; 145; 154A) nearest said magnetic sources. Methods for mixing and separating particles are also described.
