    • An integrated cam and shift fork assembly is disposed on a rotating shift rail (106). The shift fork (124) assembly includes a cylindrical body (100) having a helical cam (114) at one end. Adjacent the cam end of the body is a cam follower (118) secured to the rotating shift rail. The opposite end of the body either includes a second cam (102) and suitably disposed cam follower or a flat surface engaged by a return spring. The rotating shift rail is driven by an electric motor (152) through a suitable speed reducing and torque increasing drive such as a worm gear set (156). One or both of the aforementioned cam configurations may be utilized in a transfer case on a single shift rail to, for example, select a high or low speed range, couple the primary and secondary drive lines together or both.

    • A transfer case (18) adapted for installation on a front-wheel drive vehicle having a transversely oriented engine (12) and transaxle receives drive torque on a transferse axis and provides it to the rear differential (34) on a longitudinal axis. The transfer case is driven through the front axle center differential cage (16). A drive chain (84) delivers power through sprockets to a modulating or viscous clutch (100) disposed behind and parallel to the front stub axles. The output of the clutch is provided to a bevel gear (170) set which drives the rear prop shaft (32), rear differential (34) and rear axles (36). The transfer case and rear prop shaft are preferably disposed along the longitudinal center line of the vehicle. Alternatively, the transfer case and the rear prop shaft may be disposed along an axis laterally offset but parallel to the longitudinal center line of the vehicle.
