摘要： A called party is alerted to the presence of a voice call on the Internet (110) by a page that is automatically transmitted to the called party's pager (120) upon initiation of the call by a calling party from his terminal (101) running Internet voice communications software and equipped with a microphone (102) and speaker (103). The page is transmitted in response to a message sent by a service provider (115) on the Internet, which receives from the calling party's terminal on the Internet, information for identifying the called party's pager. The called party, upon receiving the page, connects to the called party on the Internet through his home terminal (105) that is running that same voice communications software and is also equipped with a microphone (106) and speaker (107), or through any such similarly equipped portable or fixed terminal (125) at any location from which the Internet can be accessed. Alternatively, the called party can answer the call on the Internet with a standard station set (131) by calling an Internet-savvy platform (130), which converts the packetized voice signal of the calling party into an analog signal and the analog voice signal of the called party into packets for transmission on the Internet.

摘要： The invention is an apparatus and method for updating a communications network (16) from one or more user communications devices (12, 78). The invention uses the electronic scheduling or other time-based features within a communications device to control and/or initiate transmission of information between the communications device and the communications network. Information from one or more communications devices is updated to the communications network in response to time-based components in the information entries corresponding to a timing device (42) associated with the respective communications device. Also, once the network has received this updated information, comparisons of related information entries are initiated to detect discrepancies therebetween. In this manner, user submitted time and geographic location information is compared with similar information automatically retrieved by the communications network using conventional and future network communications technology. Any detected discrepancies are used to initiate appropriate notification to the user and/or retrieve updated information, or to default to existing message delivery systems (79).

The mobile party is equipped with a two-way pager which the party may use to provide call control. The pager is periodically queried by a network and/or paging service to determine whether or not the pager is reachable. If the pager becomes unreachable, and thereafter a call is placed to the party's Personal Telephone Number, the network routes the call to a default station. If the pager is reachable, any one of a number of alternative call routing procedures may be invoked including: registration type routing, call-by-call routing, revertive calling, call examination routing, and subsequent routing. In one possible embodiment, a Customer Routing Point is used to store the pager status along with other call routing information, and a Network Control Point is used to carry out the appropriate routing procedure. Other possible embodiments include: using an adjunct to perform the functions of the Customer Routing Point and Network Control Point; and combining an adjunct with a Customer Routing Point and Network Control Point.

摘要： An intelligent pager remotely manages an E-Mail server that receives E-Mail messages transmitted over an E-Mail network. Useful E-Mail messages can be identified by the pager and separated from the junk mail. The pager remotely controls the server to forward messages as directed by the recipient. The E-Mail server sends a summary of the E-Mail message to the pager over a different network so that the pager can select a forwarding destination for the message. The pager sends a selection signal to the E-mail server which then forwards the E-Mail message to the selected destination. The E-Mail message can be forwarded by the server over another network, such as the public telephone network, to a computer or a FAX machine at the recipient's office, home or other destination.

摘要： With the advent of personal digital assistants (PDAs) (103) having modems (225) for information, e.g., facsimile and/or data, transmission over wireless connections, as well as the capability (125) for voice communications, we have recognized that it is possible to communicate with a person, wherever they are, in whatever form is desired. In order to do so in a manner that simulates the way a person at a fixed location having a separate telephone, fax machine and data modem would communicate, we incorporate into a PDA a) a receiver (201) for a wireless actuation signal that indicates that a communication of some type is waiting for a called party; b) an outgoing connection origination unit (209,225,811) that establishes a connection from the PDA to the waiting communication; c) a discriminator (205) which makes a determination as to the type of communication that is waiting; and d) a selection unit (205) that routes the information signals received over the connection established by the PDA to an appropriate communication unit within the PDA, e.g., a fax modem, data modem (225), or voice communication unit (125), the appropriate communication unit being selected in response to the type of communication that was determined by the discriminator to be waiting. The PDA owner may optionally be alerted only when 1) an information transmission is successfully completed and the received information is waiting in the PDA for access by its owner, or 2) when a voice connection has successfully been established to the communication originator who continues to indicate a readiness to communicate.
