    • An adhesive composition comprises a phenolic resin and a latex, and, in addition, from 0.1 to 30% of an aqueous dispersion of a hydrocarbon wax.
      The adhesive composition has use in the production of composite articles comprising rubber and a fabric, such as transmission belts and conveyor belts. By using the adhesive composition, the extensibility of the fabric can be increased without reducing the strength of the adhesive bond between the fabric and the rubber. A composite article may thus be formed by a method comprising treating a fabric with the adhesive composition, drying the treated fabric, applying a layer of an unvulcanised rubber to the dried, treated fabric and vulcanising the rubber.

    • An apparatus for producing, in a test piece of a fabric or polymeric material, a simulation of the effects of fatigue suffered in normal use comprises retaining means (1,2) for retaining a test piece such that at least a portion thereof is maintained under a predetermined tension; an abrading tool (3) comprising a blade (4) having a tip (5) which in use contacts the surface of the portion of the test piece maintained under tension; and means (7-12) for oscillating the blade (4) through a predetermined amplitude such that, in use, the blade (4) subjects the test piece to surface abrasion and flexing.
      The apparatus is used to study the effects of wear in fabric and/or polymeric materials, particularly the effects of surface abrasion and flexing in timing and transmission belts.

    • There is disclosed an adaptive material (1) comprising a sheet, a plurality of members (4) having regions with different electromagnetic radiation absorbing and/or reflecting properties movably retained on or within the sheet such that portions of the members (4) are visible through apertures (3) in the sheet when the material is viewed in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the sheet and means for moving the members (4) such that different portions thereof become visible through the apertures (3). The overall appearance of the material is thereby changed.
      Also disclosed is an adaptive material in which the overall permeability of the material can be changed.
