    • When slack-free railcar connector assemblies are placed under very high tensile loading, the connector assembly components will stretch and allow a typical "rigid" gravity wedge to descend into a fully seated position between the components and lock-in the tensile loads. The locked-in loads become additive in nature when successively encountered compressive loads are experienced by the connector assembly, thereby increasing the lateral drawbar angling forces, as well as accelerating coupling component wear. The wedge component (70) of the present invention includes means (60) for vertically supporting and retaining the wedge in a holding position slightly above the normally fully seated position during the tensile loading, thereby eliminating the build up of tensile forces in the connector assembly.

The apparatus includes a holding fixture for retaining and orienting the wheel, three sampling assemblies (50,52,54) each having at least one sensor for measuring various parameters of the wheel, a controller (64) for receiving and analysing the data and an output device (65) for recording or displaying the analysis.

    • A railway car with a slackless drawbar arrangement for unit trainservice and the like is provided and includes a drawbar (15) having a section (50) which is fabricated. The fabricated intermediate section (50) is cut from a section of seamless pipe or tubing or can be fabricated from plate, while the coupling end pieces (16,18) attached to each end of the shank are at least partially cast members made from typical casting methods. The coupling end pieces can be cast into standard fixed or rotatable drawbar ends or even be a combination thereof with rotational capability. The geometric shape of the intermediate section is varied, depending upon the application, so that resistance to torsional or bending loads is maximized. The fabricated shank portion is hollow, as is part of the body of the coupling end pieces, thereby reducing the railcar's weight and costs to manufacture.

    • A restrained pipe joint (11) is provided for affixing the spigot end (12) of a first pipe into the socket end (10) of a second pipe. The pipe joint (11) includes a circular restraining ring (26) and a retainer ring (34) which includes a groove ring (36) and a plurality of locking segments (38). When the retaining ring (34) is tightened, the retaining ring (34) is forced against the circular restraining ring (26), thereby engaging the locking segment teeth (40) into the spigot end (12) of the first pipe. The groove ring (34) abuts the circular restraining ring (26) which holds the spigot end (12) of the first pipe within the socket end (10) of the second pipe.
