    • A filter system and method are provided utilizing a filter tank (14) separated into an inlet compartment (17) and a filtrate compartment (18) by a filter media (22). Under normal filter operation, the liquid to be filtered enters the inlet compartment and is passed through the filter media and out the filtrate compartment by a pressure differential created across the filter media by a pump device (42). When the need arises to move the fitter media as a result of the build up of contaminants on it, it is necessary to alleviate the pressure differential across the filter media. Such pressure differential is alleviated by the controlled flowing of filtered liquid through an orifice (104) in a closed valve (52) into the filtrate compartment.

    • @ A filter device (10) for separating a foreign material-liquid mixture into distinct portions includes a holding tank (12). On a bottom of the tank is a permeable grid panel (28) formed with a series of elongated corrugations (32). The panel (28) connects with an impermeable inclined ramp (82) formed with corrugations of a like configuration. A conveying device (not shown) carried within the tank comprises a pair of spaced chain loops to which are connected a series of transversely positioned flights, each including a scraper plate having a corrugated edge which complementally mates with the corrugations (32) of the grid panel (28) and inclined ramp (82). As the liquid portion of the mixture flows through the grid panel, the foreign material is retained and collects to form a cake on the panel. Periodically the conveyor is activated and the scraper plates move over the grid panel corrugations (32) to remove the collected foreign material and move the foreign material up the inclined ramp (82) for disposition external of the tank.
