    • There is disclosed a novel porous hollow fiber membrane which is characterized by such a unique porous structure that the inner and outer membrane surfaces have an in-a-plane average pore diameter of 0.01 to 10 µm and the porous membrane wall has an in-a-plane porosity of not less than 10 % measured in every plane perpendicular to a radial direction of the annular cross-section of the hollow fiber membrane, wherein the in-a-plane porosity exhibits at least one minimum value between the inner and outer membrane surfaces. The present porous hollow fiber membrane has been found to be especially useful for the removal of a virus from an aqueous protein solution containing a virus. A virus can be effectively removed from an aqueous protein solution with not only an extremely high virus removal percentage but also an extremely high protein permeability, without causing the protein to be denatured.

    • A body fluid treating circuit comprising a block for collecting a body fluid from a human body, a body fluid treating block and a block for returning the treated body fluid to the human body, said body fluid treating block comprising a plurality of treating units (A1, A2) for treating the body fluid by passing therethrough, the units being arranged in parallel flow relationship, body fluid feed and return lines (D, E) connected to each of the treating units so as to selectively feed to and return from the units through line switching means (M3, M5, M7, M9), regenerating liquid feed lines (F) connected to each of the units so as to selectively feed the regenerating liquid (source (B)) to the units through line switching means (M4, M6), washing liquid feed lines (H) connected to each of the units so as to selectively feed the washing liquid (source (C)) to the units, discharge lines (G(J)) for discharging the regenerating liquid or washing liquid connected to each of the units so as to selectively discharge from the units through line switching means (M8, M10), and a means (J) for measuring the salt concentration of the washing liquid effluent from the units. Using the above circuit, the body fluid is fed to at least one first treating unit among a plurality of treating units to treat it up to a predetermined volume and the feeding is then switched to the residual second treating unit or units. The regeneration and washing of the first unit are conducted by succesively feeding the regenerating liquid and washing liquid while treating the body fluid in the second unit, and after the completion of the treatment in the second unit, the body fluid feed line is switched to the regenerated and washed first unit with confirmation of the salt concentration of the effluent therefrom. The above procedures being further repeated as occassion demands.

    • A therapeutic apparatus for the removal of a harmful agent from blood is provided in the form of an array of hollow fiber bundles (10; 16) connected in parallel, wherein the interior surfaces of the individual hollow fibers are coated with a covalently bound proteinaceous or other immunoadsorbent selected for specific removal of the harmful agent. In the disclosed method the apparatus is optionally connected as an extracorporeal shunt between the artery and vein of a patient to be treated and the blood is alternately routed through one fiber bundle while the remaining fiber bundles undergo regeneration. Specific embodiments include the removal of rheumatoid factor by covalently bound immunoglobulin G and the removal of digoxin by covalently bound anti-digoxin.
