    • A transmitter for transmitting at least a first and a second main signal component (L+R) is disclosed, having at least two input terminals(1,90) for receiving the at least two input signals. The transmitter comprises multiplexer means (111') for multiplexing the at least two input signals to a first input (11') of matrixing means (13'), and to an input of first bitrate reducing means (BRR1). The first bitrate reducing means is for carrying out a data reduction step on the signal applied to its input and to supply a data reduced version to an output. Expansion means (7') are present, having an input coupled to the first bitrate reducing means (BRR1), for carrying out a data expansion on the data information applied to its input, so as to obtain a replica of the signal applied to the input of the bitrate reducing means at an output. Said output is coupled to a second input (12') of the matrixing means (13'). An output (14') of the matrixing means (13') is coupled to signal combination means (29) via second bitrate reducing means (BRR2). The output of the first bitrate reducing means (BRR1) is also coupled to the combination means (29). The signal combination means (29) is adapted to combine the signals so as to enable the transmission of those output signals. Conversion means (SPL2,SPL3) are provided between the input terminals (1,90) and the inputs of the multiplexer means (111') for converting the input signals into corresponding subsignals, such as subband signals. (Fig. 6) Further, a receiver for receiving the signals transmitted by means of the transmitter via the transmission medium, is disclosed. (Fig. 7) The signals supplied by the combination means can be recorded on a record carrier (193).

    • The apparatus for encoding a plurality of digital information signals, having at least a first input unit for receiving a first digital information signal and a second input unit for receiving a second digital information signal. A signal combination unit combines the first and second digital information signal to generate a first combination signal. First and second data compression units compress the first and second digital information signal so as to obtain first and second data reduced digital information signals. First, second, and third masked threshold determining units determine first, second and third masked thresholds respectively from the first, second digital information signals and the combination signal respectively. A selection unit selects one masked threshold from the first and third masked threshold so as to obtain a first selected masked threshold. Preferably, the first selected masked threshold is the smallest of the first and third masked thresholds. The first data compression unit compresses the first digital information signal in response to the first selected masked threshold. A formatting unit combines the first and second data reduced digital information signals into a transmission signal for transmission via a transmission medium. The choice is made between at least two masked thresholds, including the masked threshold derived from the information signal itself and the masked threshold derived from another signal. The other signal may be a combination signal that includes the information signal.
