    • Disclosed is a tuned channel detector which includes a cable path between a radio frequency source (108) and a receiver (102) such as a TV, wherein the radio frequency source passes first through an attenuator (106) and a second through a signal selection module (104) comprising two opposing direction couplers (120, 122) and a single-pole/double-throw switch (124). The channel to which the TV is tuned is determined by measuring the TV's local oscillator signal from the cable which feeds the radio frequency signal to the TV and, additionally or alternatively, by comparing the signal strength of the input and reflected TV carrier signals at and around the channels under test. Signal detection is further enhanced by modulating the signal mixed with the local oscillator with a tone and/or testing only during certain intervals such as the vertical synchronization interval or the power line cycle. A tone detector (238) having a synchronous rectifier (304) is used to detect low level local oscillator signals. Tuned channel detection is further enhanced through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.

    • An automatic tuning system for television receivers. An auxiliary frequency is first connected losely to the high point of the band-pass filter while the amplification stage is completely turned off. After optimum tuning of the band-pass filter, the auxiliary frequency is turned off and when the pre-amplifier is fully turned on the input circuit is tuned. The frequency of the tuner oscillator is at the same time raised by half the amount of the second tone intermediate frequency. The tone carrier of the channel selected now serves as an auxiliary frequency. After tuning the tuner oscillator frequency is again switched to the desired value, whereby the input circuit is tuned to mid-band frequency, since the tuning voltage is lowered by the same amount as for adjustment of the desired oscillator frequency.
