Also stored is a channel map that links channel names with local channel numbers. In use, when a particular on-screen guide is selected for display, electronic program guide (EPG) information required to display the selected on-screen guide, including title, start time, and regional channel name is retrieved from memory, together with the local channel number linked to each regional channel name. Once retrieved the titles, start times, regional channel names, and the local channel numbers are displayed as the selected on-screen guide.

摘要： One of the television signals from a plurality of channels includes as supplemental data a plurality of channel lineups and a unique geographic area identifier for each channel lineup. When the transmitted television signals are received at a tuner (18), the transmitted identifiers are compared with a user inputted geographic area identifier. The transmitted channel lineup for the transmitted identifier that matches the user inputted identifier is stored (28) for future use as a valid channel lineup. The valid channel lineup is then used to set the tuner in response to user inputted channel commands. The described arrangement can be used to download channel lineups with a television signal that is transmitted to viewers of services that have different channel lineups. The applicable channel lineup is determined at the local tuner by means of the geographic area identifier.

The guide mode includes an electronic program guide (EPG), which provides the viewer program information for tuned programs, and a tape index guide (TIG), which provides information for programs recorded on a video cassette (16). In both guides, real time images of a program are displayed in a PIP window (50) on the television screen and guide information (56, 58) is displayed in the background. In both guides, the viewer may switch between a currently telecast program or a recorded program. The viewer may access either guide from the television mode and vice versa. In the guide mode, the viewer may independently switch the guide information and the type of program, i.e., tuned or recorded, in the PIP window.

摘要： Advertisements (50) are inserted in an EPG on the screen (40) of a display monitor (20) between the individual television program listings. Specifically, a memory (22, 34) stores EPG data and advertising data. A microprocessor (24) is programmed to recover EPG data corresponding to a number of television programs and advertising data from the memory. The microprocessor controls the monitor to display the recovered EPG data on the screen in lines of television program listings, each television program listing being displayed in a separate line, and to display the recovered advertising data in a line on the screen instead of one of the television program listings. The EPG and advertising data are displayed in a first area (46) of the screen and a detail window is displayed in a second area (44) of the screen. One of the lines of EPG data is highlighted with a cursor (48). A description of the television program listing highlighted by the cursor is inserted in the second area. When the line of advertising data is highlighted with the cursor, an information relating to the advertising data is inserted in the second area.
