    • An FM receiver for receiving a text-based multiplex broadcast includes a decoder for taking out text-based program data from a multiplexed signal received at a receiver circuit and a controller having first and second memory areas. Data taken out by the decoder is alternately written to the first and second memory areas each time a power supply is turned on. When the power supply is turned on, the controller reads out data from one of the first and second memory areas that is carrying out writing of the data, and displays a text-based program at a display element with this read-out data. The memory area carrying out the reading of data is then alternately changed over between the first and second memory areas upon the operation of a prescribed key.

    • A wireless output input device (WOID) digital audio player for storing and/or receiving digital audio and preserving the digital stream without the inherent distortion of translating the stream to analog prior to modulation and transmission, which includes an FM receiver, and an FM transmitter for transmitting the audio to an external FM radio or receiver. The device automatically and periodically scans a plurality of channels on the FM band to determine the channel having the least amount of interference and then tunes the FM transmitter to the frequency of that channel and displays the channel to which the external receiver should be tuned. A remote control may be provided to selectively transmit signals to the player's FM receiver for controlling operation of the player.

    • A method and system are provided for remultiplexing program bearing data. The remultiplexing method and system are applicable to MPEG-2 compliant transport streams carrying video programs. A descriptor based system is used for scheduling the timely output of transport packets wherein each descriptor records a dispatch time as well as a receipt time for each transport packet. The receipt time is used for estimating program clock reference adjustments, but final program clock reference adjustment is performed in hardware in relation to the precise output timing of each transport packets. A descriptor and transport packet caching technique is used for decoupling the synchronous receipt and transmission of transport packets from any asynchronous processing performed thereon. The descriptors can also be used for managing scrambling and descrambling control words (encryption and decryption keys). Remultiplexing functions may be distributed across a network. The remultiplexer can furthermore optimize the bandwidth of transport streams by replacing null transport packets with transport packet data to be inserted into the output transport stream. Program data transmitted via asynchronous communication links is re-timed and assistance is provided for outputting program data on such asynchronous communication links to reduce a variation in end-to-end delay incurred by the program data. Remultiplexing and program specific information can be seamlessly dynamically varied without stopping, or introducing a discontinuity in, the flow of outputted transport packets. A technique is also provided for locking multiple internal reference clock generators.

The method of selecting the audio channels of an A/V data stream including a plurality of programs, each program including at least two kinds of audio data streams, each audio data stream including at least two sub-audio data streams which are not repeated and having a series of IDs according to a predetermined order of precedence, the method including (a) when a program is changed to another program, searching whether there is a sub-audio data stream having a channel ID which is the same as the channel ID assigned to the sub-audio data stream of the program which was being reproduced before the program was changed, in the changed program, and (b) when it is determined that there is the sub-audio data stream having a channel ID which is the same as the channel ID assigned to the sub-audio data stream of the program which was being reproduced before the program was changed in the step (a), selecting the sub-audio data stream. According to the method of selecting the audio channels, it is possible to follow up a voice mode selected by a user (maintain the previously selected audio channel) although a program or an audio data stream is changed.

    • A method and system for specifying channels for data sent upstream in a data-over-cable system, including data leaving the data-over-cable system is provided. The data sent upstream from an application has a corresponding group-identification parameter, also referred to as a flow-identification parameter. This parameter specifies a particular channel on which the data is to be forwarded. This specification is based on a correspondence between the data-identification parameter and a channel-identification parameter assigned to the channels over which data-packets are transmitted. The data-over-cable system may use the data-identification parameter to allocate access to a channel as part of a Quality-of-Service request. This parameter also allows sorting of data-packets for further transmission upstream, including possible bundling to form groups of data-packets and subsequent transmission upstream.
