    • A PCMCIA card includes a support, circuit components for providing faxmodem functions with respect to the support, a housing containing at least part of the support, a retractable cord mechanism at least partly contained in the housing for connecting the electronic component with an external device for communications therewith, the retractable cord mechanism including a cord and a storage mechanism for storing at least part of the cord in the housing, and a foldable connector coupled to the cord for storage in the card and for pulling from the card for connecting to the external device. The foldable connector includes a main body portion and a supplemental body portion which releasably and pivotably attach to one another. Alternate embodiments use optical or radio signal coupling from the PCMCIA card and all embodiments do not require a separate telephone connector to a telephone wall jack.

    • A connecting structure for covered wires is provided. At first, a shield wire 1 and a ground wire 2 are prepared. After overlaying the ground wire 2 on the shield wire 1 cross each other, respective overlapping portions of the wires 1, 2 are interposed between an upper resin tip 13 and a lower resin tip 14. Next, the upper and lower resin tips 13, 14 are oscillated with ultrasonic waves while compressing the upper and lower resin tips 13, 14 from the outside. Consequently, respective outside rinds 1d, 2b of the wires 1, 2 are molten for removal, so that a braided wire 1c comes into electrical contact with a core line 2a. The upper and lower resin tips 13, 14 have wire receiving grooves 13a, 14a formed on their butt faces. Each of the groove 13a, 14a has a semi-circular cross section of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the shield wire 1. The upper resin tip 13 is provided, at an intermediate portion of the wire receiving groove 13a in the longitudinal direction, with a press part 13b for urging the ground wire 2 against the shield wire 1.

    • The invention is directed to a wire cutting and stripping and terminal attaching apparatus and, in particular to an improved wire positioning mechanism for positioning the stripped end of an insulated wire in an open barrel terminal. After the insulated wire is cut and a slug of insulation is removed from the end of the wire, a gripper rotates the wire so that the bare or stripped end of the wire is located above an open barrel terminal supported on a lower die of a terminal attaching unit. An upper die is movable on the terminal attaching unit in a direction toward and away from the lower die to crimp the terminal on the stripped end of the wire. The wire positioning mechanism includes a positioning member which is mounted on the upper die and arranged to contact the gripper and push the stripped end of the wire downwardly into the open barrel terminal before the upper die operates to crimp the terminal. A power operated mechanism, such as a fluid cylinder, is connected to the wire positioning member and can move the wire positioning member to an inoperative position when the terminal attaching unit is employed to attach close barrel terminals.

    • A tool for cutting a live electrical wire and applying a connector thereto in a safe and convenient manner has a housing with a pistol grip and actuating means on a first end and wire preparing and connector application means at the opposite second end. At least the housing is made of electrical insulating material. The wire preparation portion comprises two parallel adjacent sections each having a wire gripping portion, an anvil and opposing cutter. When actuated, the cutter of one section completely severs the live electrical wire and the cutter of the other section, the sections being slightly spaced apart at this time, severs only the insulation of the live electrical wire. Continued movement of the actuation means causes the two sections to spread apart to remove the cut section of insulation from the electrical conductor and allow access of a connector applicator to the exposed end of the electrical conductor. A connector is fed from a magazine into alignment with the exposed end of the electrical conductor and releasing of the actuating means drives the connector onto the exposed portion of the electrical conductor thereby enclosing it and rendering it safe.
