摘要： The present invention provides an electrode (15, 115, 165, 225) which uses a disordered active material (15, 115, 165, 225) preferably formed by rapid solidification. The active material does not need a binder to be used as an electrode, and thus, is considered self-supporting. The material also is substantially nonporous or impermeable to an electrolyte and when used as an electrode exhibits an increase in cell capacity with improved resistance to corrosion. An electrochemical cell (10, 85, 100, 150, 200) and battery (75) utilizing an electrode of the present invention provides greatly improved cycle life and energy density without a significant decrease in cell capacity. Methods of making the electrode by rapidly solidifying a disordered material are also included. A method of assembling an electrochemical cell using a self-supporting electrode includes the step of producing a disordered active material and aligning the material in a predetermined position in a cell casing.

摘要： The present invention provides a coating for electrodes for use in electrochemical cells having an electrochemically active species and an electrolyte. The coating includes a selectively permeable material which allows for the diffusion of the active species through the coating during operation ofthe cell while providing a substantially impervious barrierto the electrolyte. Electrodes utilizing the coatings described herein may be used in primary and secondary cells over a wide range of operating temperatures to delivery better electrochemical performance even at room temperature. Methods of making the coating and an apparatus for performing these methods on a continuous basis are included in the present invention. A novel composition of matter also is contemplated containing lithium, silicon, and fluorine prepared by exposing lithium metal to SiF 4 .

摘要： The present invention provides novel active materials (15,40,115) which reversibly store hydrogen under conditions which make them exceptionally well-suited for electrochemical applications. These active materials have both novel compositions and structures. A first group of active material compositions incorporate the elements of titanium, vanadium, and nickel. A second group adds zirconium to the first group of active materials. A preferred third composition group adds chromium to the first group of active materials. These materials may be single or multi- phase combinations of amorphous, microcrystalline, or polycrystalline structures. Preferably, these materials have a multiphase polycrystalline structure. Methods of reducing the size or of sizing these materials, as well as other hydride-forming alloys, also are provided. Methods of preparing the inventive hydrogen storage materials and fabricating electrodes (15,40,115) from these active materials are contemplated. Electrochemical cells (10,100) and batteries assembled with the inventive electrodes provide significantly improved capacity and cycle life.
