    • A tape head assembly for high-speed and high-density multi-channel read-while-writing (RWW) operation comprises two modules bonded together. The modules are initially formed on an integral unit and gapped in pair, to produce a good reference surface, which insures that the finished head assembly will meet tight azimuth and gap tolerances. The unit is then machined to two separate the modules. Further processing involves individually machining the head surface of each module to achieve desired contours. The machined modules are tested and brought together in the positional arrangement required to form the final head assembly. In disclosed embodiments, the overall contour enables the assembly to skive air and debris off a surface of the magnetic tape before passage of the tape over the transducers. The contour allows the tape to fly over outriggers, but contacts regions at or around the transducers with a low constant contact pressure during RWW operation.

    • A method is provided for cleaning a transducer head in a tape drive. The method includes the steps of: providing a tape drive with a head cleaning device, a data tape cartridge having data tape, and a cleaning tape cartridge having cleaning tape; detecting error rate for the transducer head with the data tape; determining when the detected error rate exceeds a specified level; and when the detected error rate exceeds a specified level, loading the cleaning tape cartridge into the tape drive and running cleaning media on the cleaning tape over the transducer head to clean the transducer head. Another method includes using a head cleaning device to clean the transducer head when there is an identified need, or as a preventative measure.

    • A device for cleaning the magnetic head of a disk drive mainly formed from a lower plate having a notch at a front end thereof, an upper plate closed to the lower plate and having an opening at a front end thereof corresponding to the notch of the lower plate, a cleaning element disposed in the opening of the upper plate, and a shutter closing the opening of the upper plate to hold the cleaning element in place. A reflex induction element is mounted in the device on the lower plate. When the device is inserted into a disk drive, the magnetic head of the disk drive is induced by the reflex induction element to move outward and contact with the cleaning element via the notch and the opening. Dust and impurities on the magnetic head are therefore removed by the cleaning element.

    • A tape drive read/write head assembly that utilizes a magnetic shield to help protect the head from any magnetic flux that strays from the tape drive's motor. The head assembly includes a voice coil motor, a transducer head (typically a read/write head), and a carriage carrying the head. The carriage is movably coupled to the motor. The magnetic shield is positioned at least partially between the head and the motor. In one preferred version of the invention, the shield is a metal plate sandwiched between the head and the carriage. It is desirable to make the shield from a high nickel content metal or similar type material that has a large magnetic flux carrying capacity with a small magnetizing force.
