    • A method is provided for cleaning a transducer head in a tape drive. The method includes the steps of: providing a tape drive with a head cleaning device, a data tape cartridge having data tape, and a cleaning tape cartridge having cleaning tape; detecting error rate for the transducer head with the data tape; determining when the detected error rate exceeds a specified level; and when the detected error rate exceeds a specified level, loading the cleaning tape cartridge into the tape drive and running cleaning media on the cleaning tape over the transducer head to clean the transducer head. Another method includes using a head cleaning device to clean the transducer head when there is an identified need, or as a preventative measure.

    • A head cleaning device that utilizes a cleaning pad in which a multiplicity of fibers are integrated into and project from a backing by, for example, sewing or weaving the fibers into the backing. Preferably, the fibers and backing are made from an electrically conductive or statically dissipative material to minimize electro-static charge build up. The cleaning device may be incorporated into a tape drive that includes a transducer head, tape guides configured to guide the tape over the head and a cleaning mechanism. The cleaning mechanism, which is configured to engage the head, includes the cleaning pad mounted to a carrier disposed near the head. The cleaning pad is constructed of a multiplicity of fibers integrated into and projecting from the backing.

    • This invention is a tape drive which includes a transducer head, a tape carrier, and a tape displacement structure. The tape carrier is provided in association with the transducer head, and is configured to support and move a tape along a tape travel path within the tape drive. The tape carrier moves the tape in contact with the transducer head along the tape travel path during at least one of a read operation and a write operation. The tape displacement structure is provided in association with the transducer head, and is configured to engage and bias a received tape from the tape travel path to a retracted tape travel path. The retracted tape travel path is spaced apart from the transducer head. The tape carrier is operative to move the retracted tape across the tape displacement structure, spaced apart from the transducer head. The tape carrier prevents at least one of transducer wear and transducer contamination caused by contact of the tape moving against the transducer head. A method is also provided.

    • Embodiments of a data storage tape control system are disclosed that works to prevent or reduce frequency of off-track errors. The invented method slows tape speed in response to the writing head or writing element moving transversely away from a track center a predetermined distance, called an “off-center limit,” wherein the off-center limit is part of the way to an off-track error limit. The off-center limit is close enough to the center of the track that the writing operation is still effective, but wherein further movement out from the center would result in an off-track error and possible overwriting or unreadable data. The tape speed reduction is preferably done in increments until the writing head/element is closer to the center of the track than the off-center limit. Speed reduction is preferably done concurrently with writing, so that writing is not interrupted. Although the tape speed is reduced, the overall efficiency of writing may be increased compared to an operation in which off-track errors and writing failures occur repeatedly, at least in part because of high tape speeds.

    • In a preferred embodiment of the invention the audio signal is bandwidth limited before being differentiated to provide either a positive or negative signal (depending on the slope of the audio signal) to a comparator which provides a corresponding logical one or zero at its output. A digital logic circuit connected to the comparator output is clocked to provide a digital output signal transition from a logical one to a zero or vice versa if its input has changed from a logical one to a zero or vice versa at least once during the clock period. The clocked digital output of the logic circuit is provided as an input to a computer where it is stored. The digital data is subsequently read out of the computer and provided to a filter and integrator to provide an audio signal replica of the filtered input audio signal.
