    • A tape drive apparatus includes a pair of reel holder gears respectively provided in reel shafts which are respectively engaged with a pair of reels around which a tape is wound, a switching operation portion for switching at least a fast-forwarding operation and a rewinding operation, and a running mechanism for transporting the tape in the positive direction and in the reverse direction by selectively driving the pair of reel holder gears based on the direction in which the switching operation portion is moved. When the tape is transported in the positive direction, if the switching operation portion is moved in one direction, then the tape is transported at a high speed in the positive direction to fast-forward the tape. If the switching operation portion is moved in the other direction reverse to the one direction, then the tape is transported at a high speed in the reverse direction to thereby rewind the tape.

    • An objective lens of an optical head is cleaned with a cartridge accommodating a cleaning disk with a brush thereon. The cleaning disk is rotated in apparatus to clean the surface of objective lens provided on the optical head. Simultaneously with causing the rotation of the cleaning disk by driving a spindle motor, the lens is moved toward and away from the disk by driving a lens actuator. Additionally, simultaneous reciprocation of a carriage carrying the optical head toward alternate inner and outer disk peripheries may be caused. Further, the operation of reciprocating the objective lens toward the inner and outer disk peripheries and the operation of moving the lens toward and away from the cleaning disk with the lens actuator may be performed in combination.

    • A recording and/or reproducing apparatus for a magnetic tape includes a supply side reel gear a takeup side reel gear, a tape guide drum about which the magnetic tape pulled out from a tape cassette is wound, a tape loading mechanism for pulling out the magnetic tape from the tape cassette and for placing it on the tape guide drum by way of tape loading and for housing it in the tape cassette by way of tape unloading, and a switching mechanism for switching the running direction of the magnetic tape pulled out from the tape cassette. This switching mechanism includes a counter gear positioned between the supply side reel gear and the takeup side reel gear during loading of the magnetic tape by the tape loading mechanism, and controls the running direction of the magnetic tape by the counter gear selectively meshing with the supply side reel gear or the takeup side reel gear after completion of the loading of the magnetic tape. Since the running direction of the magnetic tape is controlled by switching of the counter gear, the running direction of the magnetic tape can be switched promptly.

    • A system and method for precisely registering and synchronizing data sets on a recording media having a prerecorded servo pattern. The recording media is subject to continuing movement for reading and/or writing the data sets, interrupted by stopping at the end of a selected data set and restarting. During the continuing movement of the recording media, a detector coupled to the servo system continuously reads linear position registration data modulated into the prerecorded servo pattern. An interpolator interpolates the prerecorded registration data to provide precision registration information for the data sets. Upon the drive stopping the recording media, then back hitching the media and the movement restarting, selected read and interpolated registration information is provided. The detector again reads and interpolates the prerecorded registration data, and a comparator compares the again read and interpolated registration information to the provided read and interpolated registration information and any predetermined offset, and indicates a comparison match. A data formatter coupled to the comparator, responsive to the comparison match indication, synchronizes the reading and/or writing of data sets on the recording media.
