    • A fast system addressing the same problem as MRP-II is described which is suitable for a multi-processor computer. The system performs both material requirements planning and capacity resource planning. Material requirements planning is performed by the multi-processor computer (504) as follows. A process tree incorporating a bill of materials as well as routing information is ranked, and the orders for the materials of each rank are exploded before any order for any higher rank material is exploded. Separate processors (536) explode in parallel the orders for separate materials of the same rank. Capacity Resource Planning is performed in parallel, a separate processor (536) planning the capacity of a separate work center. Simulation of material production is performed in parallel for each rank, separate processors simulating the production of separate materials of the same rank. The simulation is performed starting with the highest rank and proceeding in sequence to the lowest rank. Simulation of work center schedules is performed in parallel similarly to the MRP-II method described. The invention is applicable also to Just-in-Time manufacturing, and to planning and simulation in transportation industries.

    • A system and devices for publication of newspapers and the like. The system uses an electronic memory/display unit (24) which preserves the convenience of printed material, but which has the advantages of a computer display. The system utilizes a cable television (CATV) network to distribute the information. Data are transmitted over the system from a newspaper publication facility (2). The newspaper publication facility is provided with a data processing facility (4) that transmits newspaper data (6) to a satellite transmitting facility (8). The transmitted data are provided to a cable television satellite receiving station (12) by way of satellite link (14). Signal generators (16) are coupled to the satellite link and provide appropriate signals to a CATV network transmission facility (18). Network transmission facility (18) transmits newspaper signals over a CATV line (20) to a plurality of subscriber facilities (22) with the electronic memory/display units.

The generation of a document format on the screen in a manner of easy correction is reading the information describing the format from a recording medium where the format of the document is described, displaying the read data on the screen in the same or similar format described in the recording medium, correcting and updating the format displayed on the screen in response to key operation by the operator, generating an input/output area by recognizing the format, displaying it by superposing it on the format displayed on the screen and correcting and updating the input/output area in response to the key operation by the operator. The generation of a document format in the form which makes the input and output operation easy on the screen is reading the information describing the format from the recording medium in which the format of the document is described, determining a character size per one displayed character from the read data, disposing cells on the basis of the character size thus determined, arranging outside-cell information such as character or numeric data on the basis of the cells thus arranged, compressing the cells and the outside-cell data lest they jut out from the display screen and determining the processing sequence of each item of the format displayed on the display screen.

    • An apparatus for automatic payment of parking fees in a parking zone includes stationary RF transmitter unit transmitting a signal encoding the parking fee rate per unit time to a transponder (20) carried in the vehicle.
