    • A cassette for releasably holding a film unit and locating it at an exposure position therein. The cassette includes base and cover sections locatable in a closed position wherein a pressure plate assembly on the cover section is movable toward and away from the base section between a raised film release position and a lowered pressure applying position wherein the film is pressed between opposed bearing surfaces, one of which may be formed by an intensifying screen for x-ray applications, within the cassette to locate the film unit at the exposure position. A simply-constructed, low-cost pressure plate assembly latching system is provided including a pair of latch members having latch tabs thereon which are captured in corresponding detents on the pressure plate assembly to releasably hold the latch members in a cocked unlatching position. In response to movement of the pressure plate assembly to the lowered position, the tabs are released from the detents and the latch members move forwardly automatically to the latching position wherein the tabs engagingly overlie the exterior surface of the pressure plate assembly to hold it in the lowered position.

    • An arrangement for presenting light-sensitive sheets, especially X-ray film sheets, to a treating machine, especially to a developing machine, includes a closure which is mounted at an inlet opening of a withdrawing station of the machine for movement between a retracted position in which it is spaced from the inlet opening, and an extended position in which it light-tightly closes the inlet opening. The cassette containing the sheets to be withdrawn at the withdrawing station is mounted on a carriage for joint movement through the inlet opening and forms a movable unit therewith. An engaging member engages the movable unit and causes the closure to move into its extended position during the movement of the unit in an initial path section, while an unlatching device unlatches the lid of the cassette during the movement of the unit in an intermediate path section, and a lid-opening device opens the lid of the cassette during the movement of the unit in path terminal path section. A blocking device retains the lid during the return movement of the unit so that the lid is closed and latched before the closure is displaced into its retracted position. The carriage has a sealing plate which prevents manual displacement of the closure into the retracted position.

    • A cassette for releasably holding a photosensitive film unit and locating the film unit at a film plane therein. The cassette includes base and cover sections coupled together in telescoping relation for movement toward and away from each other between releasably latched first and second closed positions. In the first closed position there is minimal pressure applied to the film unit to facilitate its removal from the cassette. When the case and cover sections are located in the second closed position sufficient pressure is applied to the film unit to urge it into intimate contact with a film plane defining bearing surface in the base section. In the illustrated embodiment the cassette is configured for radiographic applications and includes an intensifying screen that is urged into intimate contact with the film unit when the base and cover sections are located in the second closed positions.

    • A cassette that holds a large format photographic film unit of the self-developing type in a film plane for exposure to x-rays has a generally rectangular housing and a pressure plate disposed in the housing. The walls of the housing are in fixed relation to one another. A variable gap film-loading opening is defined at one transverse end of the housing and a second variable gap opening is provided at the opposite end for sliding removal of an opaque envelope surrounding the film unit. Springs resiliently urge the pressure plate into intimate, continuous contact with the film unit which also places the photosensitive layer of the film unit in intimate, continuous contact with an x-ray sensitive phosphor layer disposed adjacent the film plane. Operating members such as spring-loaded slide rods mounted in the longitudinal edges of the cassette are operatively connected to the pressure plate through one or more cam surfaces. Movement of the operating members in a direction parallel to the film plane is translated into a transverse movement of the pressure plate away from the film unit. This movement of the pressure plate releases the film unit and increases the housing openings to allow the sliding insertion and removal of the film unit and the sliding removal of the envelope. Light seals are preferably provided at the openings to ensure that the cassette is light tight when the film unit is loaded in the cassette for exposure.

    • An x-ray film cassette includes two cassette parts which are connected at one side by a hinge and which are cylindrically curved as considered in a plane normal to the hinge. The cassette part which constitutes the bottom carries a foil of ferromagnetic material floatingly supported on an elastic strip-sloped peripheral frame, and an intensifying shield supported on this foil, while the other cassette part which constitutes the top carries a magnetic plate supported on elongated projections of the cassette wall and supporting another intensifying shield. In the closed position of the cassette, the magnetic plate attracts the ferromagnetic foil to thereby eliminate air inclusions between the intensifying shields and the x-ray film interposed therebetween.
