    • A gearbox containing two shafts connected internally causing the shafts to operate at different speeds. One shaft has a 21-spline female connection on one end with a 21-spline male connection on the other end. The other shaft has a 6-spline female connection on one end with a 6-spline male connection on the other end. The female end of one shaft can connect to the standard 1000-RPM power take-off shaft of a power unit. Alternatively, the female end of the other shaft can be connected to the standard 540-RPM power take-off shaft of a power unit. The output shafts operate at two different speeds; one at 540-RPM and the other at 1000-RPM. These output shafts connect to the standard 6-spline/21-spline female connection on driven equipment. By connecting the driven equipment to the matching spline shaft, the driven equipment will operate at the proper speed. It also provides capability to drive two units concurrently with one power unit. The most common use would be to connect the power take-off of farm or industrial power units to multi driven units or driven units with different RPM speed.

    • A face gear transmission system divides the input torque into multiple kinematic paths. The first kinematic scheme consists of a drive shaft and driven shaft having a plurality of pinions which contact a primary face gear. The second kinematic scheme consists of two independent symmetrical gear paths. One is a first pinion, a first idler and a first idler face gear and the primary face gear. The other independent gear path is a pinion on the second shaft, the idler, and second idler face gear and the primary face gear. The face gear transmission is especially applicable to rotorcraft having one or more input drive shafts to provide a proprotor transmission system which is relatively small in size and light in weight.

    • A triple reduction final drive assembly for a work vehicle comprises a first input spur gear, a first cluster gear, a second cluster gear and an output spur gear that are located in a housing. The output spur gear is provided with an output shaft which is rotatively mounted on bearings in the housing. The first cluster gear rotates on annular bearings that encircle a portion of the output shaft. The first cluster gear and output spur gear define coaxial drive axes. The second cluster gear is also rotatively mounted on bearings located in the housing. The second cluster gear defines a drive axis that is parallel to and spaced apart from the drive axes of the first cluster gear and the output spur gear. The first cluster gear is provided with a first toothed surface and a second toothed surface. The first toothed surface of the first cluster gear engages the input spur gear thereby defining the first gear reduction. The second cluster gear is also provided with a first toothed surface and a second toothed surface. The first toothed surface of the second cluster gear engages the second toothed surface of the first cluster gear thereby defining the second gear reduction. The second toothed surface of the second cluster gear engages the output spur gear thereby defining the third gear reduction.

    • In a first embodiment of the invention, a gear ratio multiplier has directly cooperating gears which serve to rotatably connect an input shaft to an output shaft through an intermediate shaft. The input and output shafts have parallel axes of rotation and extend, respectively, from seals in opposite sides of a housing. The inner ends of the input and output shafts are spaced from one another and are each provided with a pinion gear. The intermediate shaft is rotatably carried between the pinion gears and has an axis of rotation positioned at right angles to the axes of rotation of the input and output shafts. A pair of differently sized ring gears having different numbers of teeth are affixed on the intermediate shaft. The pinion gear on the input shaft engages the ring gear on the intermediate shaft whereas the pinion gear on the output shaft engages the ring gear on the intermediate shaft. The diameter pitch is a matter of advise per application as is the tooth size and tooth number. In this first illustrated embodiment, the gear ratio multiplier is utilized in the power train of a motor vehicle and positioned between the transmission and propeller shaft to modify the gear ratio between the and one or more drive axles. Other embodiments of the invention utilize other gear assembly arrangements such as, but not limited to, sun and planetary gear arrangements and ring and pinion gear arrangements. While a motor vehicle is shown, this use of a gear ratio multipliers is applicable to other devices or machines such as, but not limited to, water vehicles, helicopters, construction machinery or any other engine or motor driven device.

    • A technique is disclosed for removably coupling a shaft and hub to one another. The hub includes a pair of tapered regions near ends of its inner peripheral surface. The shaft may be tapered in a region designed to contact one of the tapered surfaces, or a tapered bushing arrangement may be used on the same end. On an opposite end, a tapered bushing is inserted between the shaft and the hub, and interfaces with the tapered portion of the hub to draw the shaft into tight engagement with the hub, with the bushing wedged between, during assembly. A retaining plate abuts a retaining ring, within the bushing, and a fastener through the retaining plate draws the hub and shaft tightly together during assembly. The retaining plate may receive removal fasteners which urge disengagement of the tapered bushing and shaft for easy and controlled disassembly of the hub and shaft from one another for servicing.
