    • A brake assembly permits axial rotation of a shaft in a first direction and retarding axial rotation of the shaft in an opposite, reverse direction. The brake assembly includes a rotary member for mounting to and rotation with the shaft; a fluid actuated brake mechanism for retarding the rotation of the rotary member and consequently the shaft upon pressure build up in the brake mechanism; a bi-direction pump for conveying fluid from a reservoir, the pump being driven by rotation of the shaft; and a control manifold for directing circulating the fluid from the pump through the brake mechanism and back to the reservoir without pressure build up, the circulation of the fluid preventing the accumulation of gas in the brake mechanism, when the shaft turns in the first direction and or directing fluid to the brake mechanism for activating the brake mechanism by fluid pressure build up to retard rotation of the shaft when the shaft turns in the reverse direction.

    • This invention relates to a mounting stud retention system for use in a vehicle drum-in-hat disc brake assembly. The brake assembly includes a backing plate and a drum-in-hat adapter. The backing plate has a centrally located aperture and a plurality of first openings formed therein about the centrally located aperture thereof and a plurality of second openings formed therein. Each of the first openings has at least one raised tab provided thereon adjacent the opening. The drum-in-hat adapter has a centrally located aperture and a plurality of openings adapted to be aligned with the first openings of the backing plate. The brake assembly includes a fastener extending through each of the second openings of the backing plate and into the drum-in-hat adapter to thereby secure the backing plate to the drum-in-hat adapter. The brake assembly further includes a mounting stud disposed in and extending through each of the first openings of the backing plate and the openings of said drum-in-hat adapter to thereby secure the drum-in-hat adapter to an associated component of the vehicle. In accordance with the present invention, the raised tab of the backing plate is operative to capture and retain the mounting stud in the openings of the backing plate and the drum-in-hat adapter prior to assembly of the vehicle drum-in-hat disc brake assembly to the vehicle.

    • A clutch and a workpiece support incorporating the same selectively restrict rotation of a rotatable member through the use of one or more rollers that are pinched between the outer surface of the rotatable member and corresponding convergent surfaces disposed on a housing opposing such outer surface. In effect, each roller is interposed between a surface on a fixed housing and an outer surface of a rotatable member such that rotation of the rotatable member rolls the roller toward a converging gap to restrict further rotation of the rotatable member. A biasing mechanism biases the roller toward the converging gap, and a release mechanism is utilized to quickly and efficiently decouple the roller from the rotatable member by biasing the roller in a direction away from the converging gap and thereby preventing the roller from inhibiting rotation of the rotatable member.

    • This invention relates to a brake shoe mounting system for a vehicle brake assembly. The vehicle brake assembly brake shoe mounting system includes a brake mounting member and a pair of brake shoes slidably supported relative to the brake mounting member. The brake member is adapted to be secured to a fixed, non-rotatable component of the vehicle and includes an abutment having a pair of opposed slots formed therein. Each brake shoe includes a first end, an opposite second end, a web portion, a rim portion secured to an outer surface of the web portion, a friction pad secured to an outer surface of the rim portion, and only two shoe slides provided on at least one side of the rim portion. One of the two shoe slides is provided near the first end of the brake shoe and the other of the two shoe slides is provided generally intermediate the first and second ends of the brake shoe. In accordance with this invention, the second end of the brake shoe defines a shoe abutment end. The shoe abutment end is disposed in the slot of the abutment and in contact with an associated surface of the slot of the abutment to thereby define a third shoe slide of the brake shoe.
