    • A control valve of a hydraulic coupling controls pumping through a casing inlet port by a hydraulic pump and/or through a casing outlet port to control coupling between two rotary members such as by operation of a clutch. The casing is connected to one of the rotary members while a pumping component embodied by an impeller is connected to the other rotary member and meshed with an internal ring gear having one more tooth than the number of impeller teeth to provide sufficient pumping capacity so that the pump can act as a brake while still having relatively constant pumping pressure. A pressure port plate creates a hydraulic flow path for a gerotor pump and maintains pressure equalization about the gerotor pump. The pressure/torque controlling groove formed in the grooved port plate creates an efficient use of space, and the dimensions and cross sectional area of the groove can be changed easily to produce different pressure/torque curves. Supercharging occurs when the port plate groove connects the pressure and intake apertures (or halves) of the eccentric pump. Supercharging increases the threshold of speed at which harmful cavitation can occur and also reduces the amount of oil that must be drawn into a positive displacement pump.

    • A hydraulically actuated friction coupling comprises a hollow case, an output shaft drivingly connected to the case, a friction clutch pack for selectively engaging and disengaging the case and the output shaft, and a hydraulic clutch actuator. The hydraulic actuator includes a hydraulic pump for generating a hydraulic pressure to frictionally load the clutch pack, and a piston assembly disposed within the case between the pump and the clutch pack. The piston assembly includes an annular pressure plate adjacent to the pump, an annular thrust plate axially spaced from the pressure plate and adjacent to the clutch pack, and a pair of concentric radially spaced resilient annular seal members bonded to the pressure and thrust plates so as to define an annular cavity within the piston assembly. The annular cavity in the piston assembly is in fluid communication with an output port of the hydraulic pump.

    • The hydraulic coupling includes a multi-plate clutch assembly operatively connecting a pair of rotary members, an actuator assembly for actuating the clutch assembly, and a fluid control system operable for controlling actuation of the actuator assembly including a hydraulic pump and a piston mounted in a piston chamber for movement relative to the multi-plate clutch assembly. The fluid control system regulates the fluid pressure supplied to the piston chamber by the hydraulic pump to control the clutch engagement force exerted by the piston on the clutch assembly. The fluid control system includes an electrically-controlled flow control valve operable for regulating the fluid pressure delivered to the piston chamber. Preferably, the flow control valve is a pulse-width modulated PWM) valve having a moveable valve element. The position of the valve element is controlled by an electronic traction control module that monitors and responds to certain vehicle operating conditions, including a sump fluid temperature, a coupling outlet oil temperature, four wheel speeds, and the piston chamber pressure. The electronic traction control module sends a control signal to the PWM control valve for modulating the hydraulic pressure supplied to the piston chamber, which, in turn, controls clutch engagement.
