    • A safety stanchion for supporting a safety cable includes a tapered tubular post having a lower end for attachment to a support base at an oblique angle and an upper end for supporting the safety cable. The post preferably has a wall thickness of less than 0.125 inches, is frustoconically shaped and is made out of an energy absorbing, elastic-like steel such as A595 grade steel which in cooperation with the post's wall thickness and tapered, preferably frustoconical, shape is believed to render the post capable of in elastically deforming before it fails. A unique base or base assembly for mounting a stanchion upon a structural member such as an I beam, H beam or other structural beam having flange portions is also provided.

    • A novel fall protection apparatus is described wherein a worker can climb a pole, while maneuvering about the pole as he climbs. This structure enables the worker to both ascend and descend, but be protected upon an accidental fall from the pole. In particular, the arrangement prevents the worker from falling more than a couple of feet, and at the same time holds the worker away from the pole by an amount sufficient to prevent injuries caused by banging into the pole. This structure is especially beneficial in training new workers to climb poles for work, as well as requalifying previously trained workers.

    • A ladder shield for use with a stepladder for blocking access to predetermined upper steps thereof comprises a first rectangular plate configured to lie flat atop the top step of a stepladder and a second rectangular plate depending from a front edge of the first plate. The second plate is integral to the first plate and extends downwardly from the first plate at the same angle as the legs supporting the steps of the stepladder so that the first and second plates are flush with the top step and step support legs, respectively. The ladder shield further includes a third plate hingedly coupled to a rear edge of the first plate for blocking access between the top step and an uppermost support strut on a second pair of support legs. The second and third plates include fasteners for removably coupling respective plates to a step and support strut, respectively. At least one fastener on the third plate defines an aperture for receiving a padlock so that the shield may be locked to the stepladder. The shield can only be removed by unlocking the third plate, pivoting the third plate outwardly, and then releasing the second plate from a respective step.

    • A retractable safety cage is provided that occupies a minimum amount of vertical space within a manhole and which provides, in an extended position, a safety barrier surrounding the entrance to the manhole or ladder. A fixed upper periphery rail provides a substantially horizontal perimeter around the opening of the ladder. One or more floating periphery rails are suspended therefrom to provide additional perimeter blocking as well as additional support for the ladder user. The safety cage comprises two vertical members that are slideably received in a bracket that can be attached to either a ladder or a support wall. A counterbalance assists movement in the extending direction and slightly impedes movement in the retracting direction. The retractable safety cage can also be easily removed from the manhole by using a guide bracket with a coupling foot.

    • A lift up rail extension assembly is to be mounted onto an existing ladder which has a first rail and an opposite second rail. The first and second rails are connected by at least one step. The lift up rail extension assembly includes a first rail extension which is slidably mounted to the first rail of the existing ladder, a second rail extension which is slidably mounted to the second rail of the existing ladder, and first and second devices for latching which are pivotally mounted to the first and second rail extensions. The first and second devices for latching are movable between an unlatched position and a latched position. In addition, the first and second devices for latching each have a weighted portion so that when the respective rail extension is extended in a first direction, the weighted portion moves the devices for latching to the latched position.
