    • Molten steel or other electroconductive metal is treated with vacuum to remove dissolved gases therefrom. A rod (28) of molten steel is drawn from a bath (14) by applying vacuum to a vertical tube (22) dipping into the molten bath (14). An electrical coil (26) surrounding the tube (22) applies an intense magnetic field to the steel rod by the passage of high frequency alternating current through the coil (26). The rod (28) is compressed radially inwardly by the magnetic field exposing the whole of the external surface of the rod (28) to vacuum. At the same time, the induced eddy currents superheat the steel rod. The large surface area of application of vacuum combined with the narrow dimension through which the gas must travel ensure rapid and efficient removal of the gases. The procedure is repeated until all the steel in the bath has been treated. Lack of contact of the steel rod (28) with the tube surface eliminates loss of heat by convection and the superheating of the steel rod by the eddy currents ensures that the overall heat losses are minimal during processing of the molten metal bath.

    • The invention concerns a method of decarburizing steel melts in a closed metallurgical vessel connected to a vacumm pump and into which oxygen can be supplied by means of a lance and combustible materials by means of a feed device. The method calls for the following steps: a) the melt is poured into the vessel, the pressure reduced continously to less than 100 mbar and oxygen blown in in order to burn off the carbon, the oxygen being blown in in predefined excess, in addition to the supplementary oxygen used during the decarburization phase; b) at the moment when the oxygen is in partial excess, metallic combustion material is supplied, distributed uniformly throughout the melt. The invention also concerns a device which includes sensors (21 and 29), located in the closable vessel, for the measurement of the melt temperature (T) and pressure (P), respectively, and which are connected via a measurement and control unit (22) to control elements (23, 25) for supplying oxygen (O2) and metallic combustion materials (A).

    • Problem: dust collection in a vacuum/reduced-pressure refining process is conducted using an inexpensive filter without causing damage on and burn of the filter. Solving means: a vacuum/reduced-pressure refining vessel (1), a dry type dust collector (3) using a filter (2) and a reduced-pressure exhaust device (4) are connected sequentially by an upstream-side duct (5) and a downstream-side duct (6), and a gate valve (7) is provided to the upstream-side duct (5). At the time of starting the vaccum/reduced-pressure refining process, non-oxidizing gas is fed into the upstream side of the gate valve (7) and oxygen on the upstream side is replaced thereby substantially. Thereafter, the upstream side is closed gastightly, the gate valve (7) is opened after the closed state on the upstream side is accomplished, and the dust collector (3) is operated. It is preferable that after the vacuum/reduced-pressure refining process the gate valve (7) is closed, only the non-oxidizing gas is fed into the upstream side of the valve to recover the pressure, and then the vessel is opened to the atmosphere, and it is also preferable that after the vacuum/reduced-pressure refining process, an opening part on the duct collector (3) side is closed during the standby till the subsequent vacuum/reduced-pressure refining process is started.
