    • A loader includes a receiving section for receiving a FOUP (front opening unified pod), an opener for transporting substrates out of the FOUP, and a transport robot for transporting the FOUP between the receiving section and the opener. When the opener transports the substrates out of the FOUP, the FOUP is placed on a holding table. The holding table is formed with a notch permitting a transport arm of the transport robot to pass through vertically. Thus, the downward passage of the transport arm with the FOUP held thereon through the notch allows the direct transfer of the FOUP from the transport arm to the holding table. This reduces the time required for the FOUP transfer operation, to provide a high throughput, thereby providing a substrate transfer apparatus capable of achieving a high throughput.

    • The invention relates in general to a moving crank mechanism that is particularly adapted for use in a conveyor system. A moving crank remains in a substantially parallel position with respect to a fixed reference plane as the crank member is driven by its offset opposed ends along an endless loop. In particular, the invention relates to a closed loop vertical lift unit adapted for use in an automated high-speed storage system. The vertical lift unit is adapted to be used as a primary storage location or as a lift for carrying objects in transit between levels in a storage system. The vertical lift unit includes a plurality of crank members with generally rigidly mounted shelves that are adapted to carry objects continuously and indefinitely as the shelves travel through a vertically oriented closed path. While traveling along the vertically oriented closed path the shelves remain parallel to a fixed horizontal plane so objects can be carried on the shelves while the shelves transition between the up and down reaches of the vertical lift mechanism. The opposed ends of the crank member are journaled in carriage members that are mounted to carry the respective ends of the crank member around the closed loop. The respective ends are carried around the closed loop at about the same rate. The closed loops are offset from one another by the amount of the crank offset. Shelf stabilizing mechanisms can also be employed.

    • A method and an apparatus for collating a plurality of groups of mail items, such as flats mail, each group being pre-sequenced according to prioritized delivery addresses, into a final sequenced set of the mail items from the groups, utilizing the prioritized delivery addresses. Each bundle of mail items is formed into a single input stream of the individual mail items. The mail items are transported along a conveyor system from the input stream to a staging tower assembly. The mail items are sorted at the staging tower assembly into a plurality of subsets of mail items re-sequenced as an intermediate step to achieving the final sequenced sets. The mail items are then collated and merged into a single output stream from the respective subsets of mail items in the final sequenced set. Portions of the output stream from the staging tower assembly are collected in batches which maintain the sequence consistent with the prioritized delivery order sequence of the mail for a given carrier route.

    • A material handling apparatus including two or more vertical storage towers aligned along a process path. Each of the two or more vertical storage towers includes a set of movable storage shelves coupled to define an endless loop that may be rotated bi-directionally along a vertical storage path. Each shelf may be positioned relative one or more input position associated with a horizontal input path and one or more article output position associated with a horizontal output path. One or more articles may be stored on any available shelf. Any stored article may be retrieved from any shelf, in any order, providing for random access of any article. The apparatus operates asynchronously to bi-directionally rotate each set of shelves independently of other sets of shelves and independently of the horizontal input and output paths. The material handling apparatus may be configured in modules, and may be expanded in modular increments.

    • A cafeteria tray accumulator includes a plurality of tray holding cages that are suspended from a drive track that moves in a loop with one transverse leg disposed above another transverse leg. Each tray-holding cage includes a plurality of shelves that hold cafeteria trays on above the other. A counterbalance mechanism is used to prevent the cages from swaying back and forth. The counterbalance mechanism may be an offset rail or a wheel carried by the cage that engages a support structure. The accumulator has increased tray capacity because of the multiple tray-holding cages and the two transverse legs of the drive path.

    • A rotating tool pot chain is capable of bending in both directions, the tool pot sweeps a relatively small area as it rotates, and the chain is capable of holding the tool pot stably. A pair of inner link plates (23) and a pair of outer link plates (24), are formed with openings to provide tool pot storage areas (23a, 24a) so that the tool pot, when stored, is parallel direction with the adjacent link connection pins 26. The center of each tool pot storage area (23a, 24a) is located on a chain pitch line passing through the centers of the adjacent connection pins 26. Further, the fulcrum (support pin 50) on which the tool pot 42 rotates is below the level of the adjacent connection pins 26 but above the bottoms of the tool pot storage areas (23a, 24a).

    • A materials handling system comprises a rotary shelf rotatable around a rotary shelf axis, and a plurality of load receiving sections disposed on a rotary circular path having its center located at the rotary shelf axis. A transfer operating section of a transfer means disposed laterally outside the rotary shelf is rotatable around a transfer means axis and operates on a transfer circular path tangentially superposed on the rotary circular path, and a fixed shelf is installed on the transfer circular path. The transfer means unnecessitates an occupied space for travel, and the whole system including the rotary shelf and fixed shelf can be made compact in size. The transfer means having no traveling mechanism allows the transfer operating section to be lowered almost to the floor. With the rotary shelf and fixed shelf, the storage level is allowed to be lowered to further increase the amount of storage.
