    • A hand-held digital tire pressure gauge is designed such that it will provide valid tire pressure readings even for tires that have an elevated temperature due to the vehicle having been recently driven. The measurement from an ambient (outside) air temperature sensor is subtracted from the measurement of a sensor that employs a unique device for sampling inner tire air temperature and the result is then multiplied by a known factor representing the normal unit of air pressure variance experienced per unit of temperature variance. This value is then subtracted from the measurement of a tire air pressure gauge sensor to derive and display a “corrected” air pressure that the tire would have had if its inner air temperature were equal to the surrounding air temperature. The objective of the gauge is to help the user to realize increased fuel mileage, reduced tire wear, and improved handling and safety of the vehicle.

    • Signal transmission apparatus for use, for example, in a passive sensor system such as an in-vehicle tyre pressure sensing system, comprises transmitter circuitry and receiver circuitry coupled together by a coupling, preferably a wireless coupling such as two opposed plate-form antennae. The transmitter circuitry includes a resonator having at least one component whose value influences a natural resonant frequency of the resonator and can be changed in use of the circuitry. The effective value is changed, for example, by a physical parameter being sensed or by a control signal to be transmitted. The receiver circuitry includes a driver section for applying to the resonator an excitation signal having a predetermined excitation frequency that is different from the natural resonant frequency. The transmitter circuitry preferably derives its power supply from the excitation signal via a rectifier circuit. The receiver circuitry detects such a change in the effective value via the coupling. Such signal transmission apparatus can operate accurately and reliably in electronically and environmentally inhospitable environments.

    • A transponder measures temperatures and pressure within a pneumatic tire. A temperature count is transmitted, which is a function of temperature. A pressure count is transmitted, which is a function of both temperature and pressure. The pressure is determined by dividing the temperature count by the pressure count. Within the transponder, a timing generator generates a first timing window during which temperature is measured and a second timing window during which pressure is measured; a temperature register captures first data indicative of the temperature within the tire; a pressure register captures second data indicative of the pressure within the tire; and a modulator circuit impresses the first data as a first portion of a data stream on a signal output by the transponder, and impresses the second data as a second portion of the data stream on the signal output by the transponder. An oscillator outputs a signal having a first frequency which is indicative of the temperature within the tire during the first timing window, and having a second frequency which is indicative of the pressure within the tire during the second timing window. A register/counter circuit counts the oscillations of the oscillator signal during the first timing window to capture the first data in the first register, and counts the oscillations of the oscillator signal during the second timing window to capture the second data in the second register.

    • An axle assembly includes an axle, a tire having a predetermined air inflation pressure rotatably supported on the axle, and a tire inflation system for detecting an actual tire inflation pressure less than the predetermined air inflation pressure, replenishing the tire with air, and producing an inflation signal. An inventive electronic recorder receives the inflation signal, increments a count register, and transmits count register data to an output device. In a first embodiment of this invention, the electronic recorder is mounted at an easily accessible location on a vehicle which includes the axle assembly. In a second embodiment of this invention, the tire is mounted to a wheel assembly and the axle assembly further includes an electronic hub odometer for detecting a revolution of the wheel assembly and producing an odometer signal. In this second embodiment, the electronic recorder includes a first count register for receiving the inflation signal, incrementing the first count register, and transmitting first count register data to an output device and a second count register for receiving the odometer signal, incrementing the second count register, determining the distance the wheel assembly has traveled from the second count register, and transmitting distance data to the output device. Preferably, the electronic recorder is mounted to a hub cap of the wheel assembly.
