    • Advancing mechanism for a series of fixtures having collets for workpieces are actuated by a fluid actuated double-acting cylinder to lock and unlock the collet. A driven rotatable table has a plurality of equally spaced fixtures mounted thereon which are advanced seriatim to a plurality of machining stations where work is performed thereon. Each advancement moves a fixture to the unloading and loading station where the collet is released, the finished workpiece removed and a workpiece to be machined placed within the collet. The double-acting cylinder was actuated by the fluid to release the collet and after a workpiece was placed therein a reversal of the fluid clamped the collet in secured position. The collet is locked and unlocked by the operation of a transverse pin in a sloping slot in a sleeve which is advanced over the collet to move the sections of the head into clamped position to hold the workpiece. The table is driven to advance the collets the distance the fixtures are spaced apart and are accurately located by a shot pin which enters a hole in the table. Thereafter a dwell time is provided during which work is performed on the workpieces located at each of the stations. Any number of stations may be provided depending upon the number of machining operations to be performed.

    • An apparatus for gripping the interior surface of an annular opening in a workpiece includes a baseplate and a set of elements circularly arranged and coaxial with a shaft or stud extending through and perpendicular to the baseplate. The elements are circumferentially spaced apart and are slidable radially of the shaft.Each element has a pair of aligned curved slots opening respectively to the opposite circumferential ends thereof. Biasing springs are secured to the baseplate and positioned thereon to extend from a slot in one element to the adjacent slot in the adjacent element. These biasing springs bear against the side surfaces of adjacent slots for biasing the elements radially inwardly to a contracted position. An actuating member which is in the shape of a camming disc, is movable relative to the baseplate and cooperates with the elements to move them radially outwardly so that they engage and grip the interior surface of the opening in the workpiece.

    • A bar holder arrangement for holding bar stock material to be fed to an automatic machine tool comprises a frame and an elongated bar holder mounted in the frame. The bar holder includes an elongated member and a plurality of lever members which are mounted on the elongated member for pivotal movement between a gripping position and an open position, each lever member has at least one upstanding gripping member disposed on at least one end thereof. The lever members are pivotally disposed at different locations with respect to each other along the elongated member so that an upstanding gripping member of one lever member cooperates with an upstanding gripping member located at the end of the next adjacent lever member. Means are provided for pivoting the lever members between the gripping position and the open position. When the lever members are in the open position, a length of bar stock material may be dropped into the bar holder. The lever members are then pivoted to the gripping position so that the upstanding gripping members define a receiving means which holds the length of bar stock material in place. The arrangement may include a plurality of bar holders mounted in a reel formed by multi-armed spiders and a plurality of elongated members. The reel is rotatably mounted in the frame structure.

    • A manipulator (26) for controlling force and position of a retained device (22) is disclosed. Various construction details are disclosed that provide a manipulator (26) which is back driveable and which provides planar control of both force and position of the device relative to an object being worked on. In a particular embodiment, the manipulator (26) includes an actuator assembly (46) having two pairs of voice coils (58, 59), a housing (56) gimbaled to a frame (45) and engaged with the actuator assembly (46) through a universal joint (54), and a tool (22) retained in a distal end of the housing (56). Excitation of the voice coils (58, 59) produces a planar force on the joint (54). Movement of the joint (54) results in pivoting of the housing (56) about the gimbal (76) and spherical motion of the device. In a further embodiment, the manipulator (26) includes a body (57) gimbaled to the housing (56) and a plurality of force transducers (82) disposed about the body (57) and between the body (57) and housing (56). Forces on the device may be measured by the response of the transducers (82). In another embodiment, the manipulator (26) includes a plurality of position sensors (114, 116) disposed about the gimbal (76) and between the housing (56) and frame (45). The plurality of position sensors (114, 116) respond to pivoting motion of the housing (56) such that the position of the device (22) may be monitored.

    • An index table comprising a base, a main plate mounted on the base, a drive wheel mounted for rotation on one side of the main plate about a first axis transverse to the main plate, a work plate on the other side of the main plate rotatably mounted about a second transverse axis spaced from the first transverse axis, and a segment wheel mounted on the one side of said main plate and fixed with relation to the work plate. Circumferentially spaced segment drivers are mounted on the drive wheel and are adapted to engage circumferentially spaced slots on the segment wheel to intermittently drive the segment wheel and in turn the work plate. A yoke plate is mounted on the one side of the main plate for movement radially with respect to the drive wheel and the segment wheel. As the drive wheel rotates, each segment driver engages the yoke plate and moves the yoke plate relative to the segment wheel. As the yoke plate is moved radially outwardly and inwardly, it swings arms pivoted to the main plate, moving pins on the arms into and out of engagement with the sides of a pair of adjacent spaced slots on the segment wheel to unlock and lock the work plate in position. Movement of the yoke plate also functions to operate oil pistons that supply lubrication to the index table.
