    • An XYZ vise comprises a spherical body having a permanent magnet accommodated therein, a reference plate mounted on the body to be rotatable about the x- and y-axes, and a vise unit mounted on the reference plate to be rotatable about the z-axis. The spherical body comprises a pair of hemispherical members which can be selectively magnetized or demagnetized by rotating the permanent magnet. When the hemispherical members are demagnetized a workpiece clamped by the vise unit can be angularly positioned with respect to all of the x-, y- and z-axes and when they are magnetized the workpiece can be securely held in the set position.

    • Machining apparatus (150) comprises a boom (162) displaceable along spaced rails (158) and a carriage (174) displaceable along the boom (162) perpendicularly to the displacement direction of the boom. A machining station (178) is adjustably supported on the carriage (174) by three adjustment means (62) to adjust a machine head (180), such as a milling cutter, towards and away from a workpiece (151) disposed between the rails (158) beneath the machining station (178). Adjustment of the machine head (180) resutts from inaccuracies in the level of the rails (158) and/or the displacement of the carriage (174). Variations in the level of the rails (158) and/or carriage (174) are determined by a respective sensor (70) associated with each adjustment means (62) which monitors a reference defined by a planar laser beam (72). Alternatively one of the three adjustment means (62) between the machining station (178) and the carriage (174) may be replaced by a pivot (208) with the third adjustment means (224) being arranged to adjust the machine head (180) relative to the remainder of the machining station (178). In an alternative embodiment, the boom (26) is rotatable about a pivot support (18) within a cylindrical workpiece (12) with the machining station (34) mounted on the remote end of the boom (26) and optionally displaceable with a carriage (52) along the boom. The boom (26) is supported at its remote end on the workpiece by wheel units (38, 40).

    • 1381098 Multiple operation machine tools NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 7801/71 Headings B3C and B3T A machine tool for performing multiple machining operations such as drilling, boring, turning &c. comprises a work carrying assembly including a rotatable chuck 7 and which is displaceable by motor means 9, 13 and 15 in three directions at right angles so as to locate a workpiece 6 carried by the chuck 7 in any desired spatial position. Turning, boring and drilling turrets 21, 20, 24 are provided and permit selected tools to be presented to the workpiece by bringing the workpiece into working engagement with selected tool. An additional tool holder 25 is also provided which carries a tool unit 26 having an axis of rotation 30 the tool unit being pivoted about an axis 36 of the tool holder 25 whereby the axis 30 of the unit 26 generates a conical surface as it pivots about the axis 36 of the holder 25. The pivoting of the tool unit 26 in conjunction with the location of the workpiece by the work carrying assembly permits the tool carried by the unit 26 to work upon the workpiece at various angles. In the embodiment described the tool is in the form of a drill and as illustrated in Fig. 4 holes may be drilled in the workpiece in a variety of angular orientations.
