    • A tube bender for bending tubes of different diameters selectively and one at a time is disclosed. The bender has a pair of pivotally connected handles respectively connected to a form wheel and a form shoe. The wheel has a plurality of tube engagement grooves, the grooves each being generally arcuate in cross section in both axial and orthogonal planes of coss section. The shoe includes a plurality of grooves of arcuate cross section in an axial plane. Each of the shoe grooves is complemental with a different and associated one of the wheel grooves. A tube holder is adjustably positioned in fixed relationship with the wheel when a tubular work piece is engaging one of the grooves in a bending operation. The radii of each of the arcuate wheel groove cross sections is different than the radii of each other corresponding wheel groove cross sections in both the axial and the orthogonal planes

    • A preferred method for closely coupling a first and a second necking machine comprises removing an input module from the second necking machine, removing end portions of a bearing support plate and a base of the second necking machine, and fixing a cover plate to the base of the second necking machine. The presently-preferred method also comprises positioning the first and second necking machines end to end so that a drive gear of the discharge module of the first necking machine meshes with a drive gear of the necking module of the second necking machine, and the necking module of the second necking machine is adapted to receive the can body from the discharge module of the first necking machine.

    • A coating for superplastic forming (SPF) and quick plastic forming (QPF) tooling and an SPF/QPF process made possible with the coating. The coating defines the forming surface of an SPF/QPF tool, and consists essentially of either a tungsten carbide cermet or a chromium carbide cermet. The coating preferably comprises a metal matrix containing tungsten carbide or chromium carbide particles having a particle size of not more than 0.1 micrometer, and is preferably prepared to have a surface finish of not rougher than 0.3 micrometer Ra. An SPF/QPF process that makes use of a tool whose forming surface is provided with the coating can be performed without depositing any lubricant on the forming surface or workpiece.
