The laminate comprises a middle layer of a padding and a top and bottom layer comprising a sheet of porous water impermeable, moisture-vapor-permeable film bonded to the middle layer. Preferably the top and bottom layers comprise (a) a flexible, first sheet of hydrophobic material having a moisture vapor transmission rate exceeding 1000 gms./m.sup.2 .multidot.day; and (b) a continuous hydrophilic sheet attached to or penetrating the first sheet, the hydrophilic sheet having a moisture vapor transmission rate exceeding 1000 gms./m.sup.2 .multidot.day and forming a barrier to passage of fluids. The composite is useful in diverse applications such as a padding under orthopedic casts and as thermal insulation in wearing apparel.

The fibrous absorbent panel includes front and rear end panel portions, and central panel section extending between the end panel portions. The end panel portions have a relatively lesser basis weight than the side edge central portions. The fibrous absorbent panel contains highly-sorbent superabsorbent material which is substantially confined to the central panel portion. The liquid transfer layer is positioned above the fibrous absorbent panel and extends longitudinally thereof at least along the length of the central panel portion. The liquid transfer layer promotes wicking and distribution of liquid within the absorbent panel assembly.

摘要： A process for making an absorbent structure (20) having a capillary substrate (22) and regions of osmotic absorbent (24) on the capillary substrate. The osmotic absorbent is cured from a liquid precursor (40) applied to the capillary substrate. The capillary substrate has regions (34, 38) of topographically different elevations (26), taken normal to the plane of the capillary substrate. The capillary substrate is passed through a gap between a transfer roll and an anvil roll in a printing apparatus. The transfer roll has a liquid precursor on its periphery. The liquid precursor is applied to only the topographically elevated regions of the capillary substrate which contact the periphery of the transfer roll. By changing the topography of the capillary substrate, the liquid precursor can be applied to the capillary substrate in different pattern, without changing the transfer roll. This arrangement allows for absorbent structures having various patterns of osmotic absorbent on a capillary substrate to be readily produced with great flexibility in the manufacturing process.
