    • A medical forceps is provided with two independently moveable jaw parts at the distal end. The forceps comprise a shaft with two rods extending axially therein, the rods being arranged adjacent to one another and being axially displaceable independently of one another. The first rod is joined to the first jaw part and the second rod to the second jaw part. The forceps further comprise a handle at the proximal end with two actuator elements, wherein the first actuator element is joined to the first rod and the second actuator element to the second rod. The first rod and the second rod each comprise a coupling element at their proximal ends. The first actuator element and the second actuator element each comprise a substantially complementary coupling element at their distal ends, such that the coupling elements of the rods are engageable in force-locking, but releasable manner with the coupling elements of the actuator elements by axially pushing the rods and the actuator elements together and/or by commonly rotating the two rods about a longitudinal axis of the shaft.

    • An optical strain gauge is coupled to an obstetrical vacuum extractor to measure the tensile strain resulting from the application of an extraction force. The measured strain is transmitted to a readout device and converted to a readable indication of the force applied. The optical strain gauge may be of any suitable design, so long as the measured reading may be transmitted and converted to a readable indication of the applied force either before or at the readout device. Preferably, the strain gauge is connected with an optical fiber to the readout device. The strain gauge may be coupled to or molded to any portion of the extractor that exhibits a tensile or compressive force or bending as a result of the application of the extraction force. In the currently preferred design wherein a stem with a handle is coupled to the cup, a sensor is disposed about the stem between a flange on the stem and the handle, which is moveable along the stem, such that the sensor measures the compressive force between the handle and the flange.

    • Forceps to facilitate the removal of foreign bodies from the skin or flesh. A rigid locator, having a circular or oval shape, is mounted to one of the jaws of the forceps by way of a rigid connector such that the opening in the rigid locator is directly in line with the opening formed by the jaws of the forceps. The opening of the rigid locator is placed around the tip of the foreign body in the flesh and pressure exerted such that the rigid locator pushes the flesh away from the top of the foreign body, permitting the jaws of the forceps to close on the exposed tip of the foreign body and remove it.
