    • A torque transfer device allows torque to be input at one point of the device and transferred to another point of the device, at which the power or torque is taken from the device. The device incorporates a continuous direct drive (9) comprised of a plurality of individual, and unconnected, pins (16) which advance each other to provide the drive. The pins (16) have enlarged ends (17) and reduced centers (18). The centers of the pins ride on a centrally disposed shedder (15) which acts as a guide rail. The direct drive (9) communicates with the drive sprockets (10, 11), traveling through the drive sprockets to rotate the drive sprockets to transfer torque.

    • A transmission includes a guideway (20) formed between a pair of tracks (22, 24) extending in a closed loop (21), and an endless train of rolling elements (X, Y, B) extending along the closed loop and rolling on the tracks and on each other. An input shaft (10) turns an input wheel (32) that carries a plurality of input wheel rollers (34), with the input wheel rollers pushing selected ones (X) of the rolling elements to move the train of rolling elements along the closed loop. An output shaft (12) is turned by an output wheel (40), with the output wheel carrying a plurality of output wheel rollers (36) that are in the path of the rolling elements to be moved by them. The rolling elements include rollers (X, Y) that roll along one track (24) and balls (B) lying between the rollers and rolling on the other track (22) and against the rollers.

    • A unit drive assembly (2) is used with postage meters (4) of the type which include a stationary base (6) and moveable print head (8). The base (6) and print head (8) are mechanically connected so that input information to the base (6) is mechanically transmitted to the print head (8). The assembly (2) includes one or more drive tracks (10) along which a series of balls (16) are positioned. A first portion (12) of the drive track (10) is carried by the base (6) while a second portion (14) is carried by the head (8). The first (12) and second (14) portions are aligned when the head (8) is in the home position; it is at this time a ball drive (28) carried by the base (6), moves the balls (16) along the track (10) discrete distances equal to one or more ball (16) diameters. The head (8) includes one or more print wheels (36) driven by the balls (16) positioned along the second portion (14) of the track (10) so that the distances the print wheels (36) rotate, which determines the value to be printed, depend upon the distances the balls (16) are driven along the tracks (10).
